Default TPS problem / question

I have a 2006 convertible -sensors are not original but I think are OEM - not sure about that

Anyway, no problems until on the way to work this morning when suddenly the dash warning comes up and says flat on RR - 0 lbs pressure. Car then went into disabled mode with reduced speed to 55 mph. It seemed odd that I hadn't received anything prior saying the tire was low - just suddenly flat

After a while the message went out and the tire checked at 31 psi and then the same thing happened again intermittently. When I got to work, I checked the pressure manually and it read at 31 psi.

I guess obvious answer is a defective sensor, but before I go through ordering a new one and installing, I was hoping to get verification that this is the problem rather than something else

Thanks

Sounds like the battery in the sensor may be on it's last leg.

I never thought a low reading from a tire pressure sensor would put the car in limp mode????
Subscribed for the outcome...

Are the batteries replaceable or do I need to replace the whole sensor?

The whole sensor, but check all four tires to make sure that the sensor is in the correct tire.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

Yes, I am pretty sure it does. If the computer detects (even wrongly) that one of the tires is flat (zero pressure or even under 10 I think) then it will restrict how fast you can go until the problem is fixed. (for safety reasons)

Maybe it won't prevent you from going faster but it does warn you.

From 2011 manual:

When the LOW TIRE PRESSURE or TIRE FLAT
message is displayed on the Driver Information
Center, your vehicle’s handling capabilities will
be reduced during severe maneuvers. The
active handling system will be affected.
See
Active Handling System on page 4-7. If you
drive too fast, you could lose control of your
vehicle. You or others could be injured. Do not
drive over 55 mph (90 km/h) when the LOW TIRE
PRESSURE or TIRE FLAT message is displayed.
Drive cautiously and check your tire pressures
as soon as you can.

This message is followed by
the MAXIMUM SPEED 90 km/h
(55 MPH) message, and then by
the REDUCED HANDLING
message. The Active Handling
System will intervene more quickly
when a flat tire has been detected.

Adjust your driving accordingly.

Thanks - I will replace the sensor.

Unfortunatley, they have been in there a while and have worked perfectly to date so it isn't an issue of incorrect location

This
Interesting, I had the sensor go out in my 2010 and showed flat tire. Drove the car for 2 weeks with no issues, no speed restriction nothing. Felt no difference in handling. No idea. Perhaps there is something I was missing.

I believe any TPS failure will just de-activate the Active handling where it does not operate correctly or at all. I don't believe it in any way effects the normal throttle response under normal driving conditions.

Batteries are going bad and it's time for replacement.

It *might* be a difference between whether the car thinks there is a 'flat' tire (tire shown as "0 PSI") and whether the car thinks the sensor is defective/lost contact (tire shown as "xx PSI").

I currently have an occasionally-defective sensor in my 2012's RR tire ("xx PSI" in DIC every few days, pops up in the middle of my 30 min commute home), and I have no speed restrictions, at least none that I've noticed up to 80MPH on my commute.
