I have Bullets, and drone does not bother me whatsoever. If it gets a little "droney", I have three other gears to put it into. I think I have done that maybe a half dozen times over the last eleven years. The rest of the time they sound great!
I disagree. It is not subjective but rather a tolerance issue.
I have Billy Boat Fusion and I absolutely love it. It sounds much throatier than stock, with a nice burble on decel. I didn't think I would ever use the quieter mode, but it takes out much of the drone at cruise speeds.
IIRC, I paid about 1400 new from Maryland Speed. Their prices seem to be consistently lower than the others, even the factory.
I have B&B PRT. If you're not going with headers and a tune, then your choice should probably come down to sound only. I suggest you just talk to people, strangers too, when you see/hear their setup. I made my choice after attending a Corvette car show by a local club. I merely walked around, asked about their set up, had them fire up the car and listened. I found the PRTs for under $1k on the web, and paid a shop $125 to install them. Good Luck!
The NPP optional 2 1/2" exhaust are the same mufflers for base and wide body. However, starting in 2009 the mid X pipe and axle over pipe (with NPP mufflers) dimensions changed, so a 2008 mid X pipe will not line up with a 2009 axle/muffler pipe.
If the OP purchased a 2009+ NPP mufflers, he would also need the 2009+ mid X pipe. Keep in mind, starting in 2012 the mid X pipe added two small cats.
Least expensive route is for the OP's 06 is to find a set of 2008 NPP's and purchase the kit to make the valves functional.
Please correct me if I am wrong. But it is my understanding that all the NPP mufflers neck down to 2 1//2 inch at the inlet. That includes Z06 and ZR1. So, if you cut the over the axle pipe from the NPP muffler and use your existing over the axle pipe, you can weld the NPP muffler to your 2 1/2 " pipe.
NPP if i remember correctly is 2-1/2 inch. Z-06 and ZR-1 are 3 inch. Does that sound right?
I just installed the npp on my 2011 base. Found a pair from a 13' on craigslist for $200. Absolutely love them. I do get the burble on deceleration and I llike it. Havent order the nnp in a box yet but I will. There is some drone on the highway that I wont always want on longer trips.
If you can find an affordable set I recommend them. Like others said, you get the sound when you want it and off when you dont.

Yes the z's are both 3" pipes. However where the pipe goes into the muffler necks down to 2 1/2". This is what I have been told by several people.

The best of both worlds
Love that decel burble , I find myself downshifting just to hear it.

NPP's for the base are 2 1/2" and run straight thru the muffler without necking down. NPP's are a complete 2 1/2" system. On the ZR1/Z06 the mufflers are referred as "dual mode." This is a complete 3" system that neck down at the muffler. Same principle as NPP, except for the earlier "dual mode" exhaust had a perferated bypass pipe, unlike the solid bypass on the NPP's. In 2011, the Z06 dual mode had the solid bypass pipe like the NPP and ZR1. So, if you are installing a 3" Z06 system and want to retain your 2 1/2" NPP's a reducer is added in the mid pipe, not butcher the axle/muffler pipe.
BTW: What are the gains from 2 1/2" NPP exhaust to a full ZR1/Z06 3" exhaust tuned? 28 RWHP and 22 ft. lbs torque on S/C LS3. HP and torque improved throughout the entire power band with most of the gains above 4500 rpm.

Had a local exhaust guy remove the mufflers, put in 2.5" pipes and had him put on some flowmaster exhaust tips. Cheap and the car sounds great, not a long term solution because one day I'd like to get a full on exhaust for it. Here's a youtube clip of mine.
