The schematics show what really happened. The left and right "stop/turn lamp supply voltage" signals come from the BCM and are shown as 'logic' which imply either a field effect or bipolar transistor as the switch... So, applying 12V to the intended output can backfeed through the transistor and provide current to charge the battery and / or drive the remote security circuitry - VOILA, the trunk now opens.
BUT - this is VERY dangerous to your electronics! Any time voltage is applied to the wrong side of a transistor, one runs a serious chance of blowing that transisitor (it is a very common ocurrence in motorcycle/quad ECM's).
Consider yourself lucky that you didn't damage the BCM -No offense and I'm glad you resolved your problem... but I would never suggest this because eventually someone WILL blow their BCM in the process.
My credentials? 30 year electrical / electronic engineering career with automotive, medical, military and space flight electronics design / management experience.

Your tail lights came on because you put power to the stop light output contact wiring that goes to lights on both sides. You say the mirror lights came on. If that is true then that would indicate that the BCM was feeding power in directions it shouldn't have been since the mirror lights are not powered off the battery. They are powered by an A/C (square wave) voltage source inside the BCM. They also are not supposed to come on if you just open the hatch. This would indicate the BCM computer was either having software issues or power was going places it shouldn't have been.
But when you say the tail lights flashed twice (not three times) when the hatch popped, that takes a lot more power than just pulling the solenoid so that would indicate you were actually sending significant power into the BCM. Again, you were VERY lucky and I hope you do not see new issues arising in the future due to a weakened BCM computer.

Just for the record it was 2008. I have a very late 2007 with separate keys. The manual showed the integral key for all 2007s but there was a problem with production and they didn't change the lock design until the next year.

It's not a problem, the door can still be opened even with the window all the way up. But it is so much easier to just have a spare metal key, test it once in a while, and open the car that way.

WOW!!! To the OP, glad you got it figured out...sorry about all your trouble. I did the same thing in my 06 Z. Took me 2 days to get back into the car. I did mine a little different. Lesson learned. Hope everything still works as it should.
