Default getting that time of year.

just had old timer thought while putting the Vette up for the winter an old trick that I have used is to but a box of detergent an spread around the tires as mice don't seem to care for walking on it to get up on the wheels. easy to clean up too. JD

Don't have to worry about doing this. Unless there's snow on the ground mine gets driven all year. If they made all season tires in GS sizes I would be driving it in small amounts of snow.

Good advice although I never put the corvette away. The car with snow tires on plowed roads is great and the corvette v8 loves cold air!

I'm old school and just use the car...101k miles since new and washed and waxed it still looks brand new....

Wash and wax this black beast in 12 minutes flat once a week and I'm good to go.

Are you already putting the Corvette up for the winter, or just in the planning stages? It just seems early.

I'm fortunate that we don't have to store them in the winter here. Enough nice days to where we can get them out.

I know there are extremes either way of the scale, but there is one good thing about our world getting warmer....it allows us to drive our cars longer into the late seasons.

it's way too early to start thinking about winter hibernation storage.
Although I do put my car up on Nov 1, we don't get snow until late December in most years.

There is nothing wrong with getting prepared, but.... it's still too nice out there, and many miles to turn before it gets shut down.

Good tips however

I agree; it was in the 90s here yesterday with a heat index of 102. I was sitting on my porch with a fan blowing on me and it seemed hotter than it had been all summer (which was hotter than normal anyway.) It is supposed to hit 90 again today, but there is a fairly heavy overcast so it probably won't make it. I'm not thinking too much about car storage right now.

I put mine up depending on the weather. Last fall was so nice that I drove it until early December (before the snow and SALT came).

In the OP: That's an interesting idea about the detergent. I live in the woods, have tons of mice and other rodents around despite having two good cats, and I know a couple who had the wiring in their new truck destroyed in short order by rodents.

I have two traps in the garage and in the fall up until January or so I average about one mouse per night. I put cheesecloth bags of mothballs in the engine compartment, in the hatch, and one on top of each wheel. I spread Downy sheets in the cabin. So far, no problems.

One thing I did discover was to leave the hood open during storage. With it closed, the mice have a gigantic playground, and a million nesting sites, totally protected from my cats. With the hood open they are exposed and they stay away from the engine compartment.

Dumb question, I worry about leaving hood open for long periods. It looks like it would possibly create problems with the hood and hinges. Seems like a lot if weight poorly distributed. Cats too will nest in the engine compartment, don't know if they will chew on wires though. Wiring must smell or taste good to animals.

Why would you leave the hood open all winter?

Side note, while camping years ago I noticed white rings around all of the tires on other campers, come to find out it was "Ajax" and it does stop ants from entering that zone, maybe other pests as well.
It was very nice here yesterday so CalVet and Myself took a trip to Needles Ca for some Chinese dining along with our better half's of course. Nice drive, cars ran great and looked super cruising down the hwy

I don't. An earlier post suggested to do that to let the cat chase away the rodents. I am tempted to get a cat to help with rodent elimination in my pole barn. They present problems too.

It's not so much that the cats "will chase the rodents away," but that rodents will not build nests in exposed areas -- especially with predators around. So an open engine compartment is something they will avoid.

Without two cats, my rodent problem would be X10. The cats are indoors most of the time during the worst of winter, but otherwise are prowling around the barn, doing what comes naturally.
