manual transmission
So, I posted over in the C7 section that I just learned that out of all the 2016 Corvettes, only 23% came with the manual tranny. WOW! That is really hard to believe because so many of the guy's here love their manual trannies. Oh well, like I stated over there, I don't feel so bad owning a A6 corvette. I always heard the Auto was a little quicker than the manual.

The less people that don't know how to drive a manual means another anti-car jacking feature to me. In my pickup, nobody asks to borrow it because it's a manual. I love it, but it's sad people are losing this art form of driving. Then there's the excuse, that I might get stuck in traffic and my poor left leg might get a little sore. These clutches are so light they don't even take this into consideration. Wimps. I drive in the city all the time.

The C7 uses the GM 8l90 hydra matic 8 speed transmission. The transmission is also used in the Silverado, GMC Yukon, Escalade, the CTS, ATS and the Camaro. Not a dual clutch transmission as used by other manufacturers, the 8L90 uses a torque converter. The transmission is 5% more fuel efficient, can handle more horsepower and torque, and weighs less than the previous 6 speed automatic.

While slushboxes have been an extra cost option in new Vettes since at least 2008, manuals command a premium in the used market.
Seems the "profile" of new buyers vs. used is very different...

Everyone does what's comfortable for them. My last Vettes were standard/manual transmission. Because of a back injury, I took a sabbatical from sports cars. I bought a Jeep Wrangler manual transmission to tow behind my motorhome. It served its purpose but it was incredibly noisy. Sold the motorhome and decided to get back into a sports car so I bought a Jaguar XK Convertible and a BMW 640i. Both were really great cars. Really nice automatic transmissions with paddle shifters and very, very fast. As my injury healed, I had the desire to get back into a sports car with a manual tranny so i traded my Jag for a 2011 C6 Convertible with manual transmission. Not only am I loving the car, I am enjoying driving again. I don't mind city traffic as the car shifts very nicely and the smooth clutch is exactly the way I like it.
And as for the BMW, like all my cars, I really loved it. My wife's former car was a lease and problematic. We decided to downsize to two cars. She said the BMW was too much car for her. I told her to pick out what she wanted and it was a Lexus ES350. It is also a nice car, especially for the wife but I find it incredibly boring to drive. However, she is happy and I am happy. Happy wife. Happy life.

Nothing wrong w. either style of trans but I will say, a manual in a Corvette in stop-and-go is not a lot of fun. A long time ago, I got stuck for an extra 1.5 hrs. over a normal 45 minute drive. My left leg was worked hard!
But it is sad to see the manual trans going away from just about every car mfr. It may be in the 20s% range for Corvettes, but it's way below 10% for all other mfrs. Many/most models of different brands don't even offer it. I'm sure the day is coming when it will be gone. Hopefully, not from the Corvette.

I love my trannie! Wait, that didn't sound right. I love my manual transmission! Although on a C7 I might try an automatic with paddle shifters, but I still don't think it would be as much fun to drive as a manual.

i'd have to drive one but after spending time in a friends gtr and 458 those dual clutch paddle shift setups are nasty! you just cant compete with that with a manual.

It's really not practical to make a manual trans with more than 6 gears. Yeah, the C7 has a seven speed but it leads to getting the wrong gear sometimes. So in the race for better fuel economy, emissions and sales appeal the automatics are leaving the manuals behind. C7 automatic is 8 speed and out performs the manual. GM & Ford are co-developing a 10 speed, someone just announced an 11 speed.
Maybe someone will come up with a radically different shifter mechanism to keep the manuals in the hunt?

Autos may be quicker, if this fact is important, but the manual is more fun.
Comes down to fun factor for me. If the difference between the two transmissions is that important, and it is a slight difference that most can not appreciate, then go with the boring one.
Now I understand that a percentage of drivers are unable to use the three pedal setup. this of course is another story.
Plus I have always felt that the manual gearbox is stronger than the autos, less trouble in the long run.
