I heard this morning that Tesla is going to bring out a completely driverless model as an option and it will cost a Tesla buyer an additional $8K when ordered with the new car, or $10K to have the same software/hardware installed on an existing vehicle. One of the business anchors suggested that the cars could be used in an Uber type application while you were at work. You drive to the office, the car goes on its business hauling fares for the day and is back to pick you up at the end of your work day. Both of you have been earning money all day. All pretty slick if they provide someone to remove all the detritus that will undoubtedly be left behind by the fares, or find your car when someone decides to steal it. Seems like a kind of naďve concept. But, hey, Elon Musk seems to have built an entire business empire on naivete. Tesla has never turned a profit. It is a hugely popular luxury car based on the number of them I see running around my area or on the magnificent edifice of a dealership they have here, but they aren't profitable. Nothing like government subscription to support your loser business selling expensive, impractical cars to rich guys.

I'm all for automatic features that back up a the human driver but not for making the human a backup for for these cars. Elon Musk in my opinion is a wack job that gets way too much press.
I do. Trust me, they will not be putting on make up while also talking on the phone, change lanes without looking know all rules and follow them. They will be notoriously predictable. Unless the software gets a hick up.
The issue isn't what they say; it's what they actually do. And, in the case of Tesla, what they do and when, compared to their alleged timeline, i.e., missed timelines for production, etc.

Space X is keeping the company going. Through government contracts and private satelite launching business. When driverless cars can go down a gravel or dirt road then maybe they will be more viable. The technology will eventually get there. People are lazy by nature. When the cars get good enough they will take over on the safety push alone. They are even considering vehicles you can live in permanately with driverless technology to eliminate living in a permanent residence. I remember when my dad complained how people got too lazy to get up and walk across the room to change a channel on a TV without a remote control.
By the time the planet has completed the conversion, I'm guessing all but the youngest of us will be dead. However, I've already investigated what's required to soup up a scooter and/or wheelchair, so I'm not stuck at the back of the chow line at the old people's home.
