I have a 2010 coupe with 22,000 miles, am thinking about new wheels and tires. Should I replace the tpms, and if I do will they need to be reset?
Jeff
I would say no, unless you have had an issue with one not working.
Mine are 10 years old, and 85K miles later, and they are still reading OK.
I did buy 4 new ones to install on my next tire change out next Spring.
If you did have to replace them, then you would need to get them married to your vehicle with a TPMS relearn tool. Tire shops all have them, as well as the GM dealer.
I replaced the TPMS sensors this Spring when I replaced wheels and tires on my 5000 mile 2009. Cost added approximately $140 which I thought was worth it on 7 or 8 year old sensors.
The TPMS sensor's internal batteries are said to last approximately 10 years. I had one of Red's fail three months ago -- right on time for an early '07. I just bought a fresh set for $83/ea from CULTRAG and will have them installed with my four new Michelin A/S winter tires next Saturday.
The dealer told me that they can go as early as 6 years. I have one on my 18k mile 2010 that is on the way out and intermittently stops transmitting and gives me the "Service Tire Monitor" message. It'll cost you a mount and balance charge to replace them later so it's not an insane cost buy I'd say you might as well replace them.
Your car is approaching 7 years old. It has been said the TPMS are supposed to last about 10 yrs., maybe a little more. From posts above, you see it can go out earlier.
Let's think of cost: if it goes out in say 1 or 2 years after you put on new wheels and tires, how much will it cost you to break down the tires, or at least have someone work on slipping in new ones? I'd have to think at least 15 mins. per tire at what hourly? $100 or so, total ($100/hr. X 4 wheels)? Plus, the sensors at $140-$160+ per set. Hmm, I think I'd do it now or when you buy new wheels and tires. jmo
I'd just wait until the first sensor died to replace them all. It doesn't require totally removing the tire and rebalancing to change them and the possibility exists you may not be the owner when that happens.
I'm at 9 years with 130K on the originals and still waiting.
