Hello, I have read a few of the other threads here about the black box on the passenger side of the windshield near the rear view mirror. I am replacing the windshield and I dont really want to put that back on because it annoys me and falls off. If I remove it totally will it have any affect on the vehicle? I dont use gps or xm radio..
They did such a poor job of locating that box...some engineer had a good solution for it and then a bean counter said "no, lets just use some double stick tape and stick it on the windshield" ...too bad. I don't have Onstar, so I can't actually offer anything useful...just a rant.
When I picked up my 08 in October the dealer replaced the windshield and as of yet I have not had issues with it falling off. Being off to the passenger side I really don't notice it.
Thanks for the replies, The issue is the new windscreen doesnt have the black outline for it to sit behind so if you are standing in front of the vehicle you can see it and it bugs me.

Sounds like I would have them correct the situation by getting the correct windshield installed. That would surely eat at me.
I'd leave it on too, its for your onstar. When they replace the windshield i'm sure they can adhere it back on good as when it was new. I just had my windshield replaced and it was not an issue to put it back on, they did it with zero issues!

You may need some day. Mine kept falling off.
Now it's on with 3M double sided tape. So far it's been staying on.

Just removing the box and painting the window will do the same thing. Since there were 4 different windshields for a C6, the replacement companies only stock the plain one and add paint as needed.

Sorry but i have ever heard of this one ....and I have been in the business a real long time .....
Most replacement companies do not "stock" glass, they buy it as needed from a supplier such as Pilkington ,PGW or Safelite warehouses
One could never duplicate the manufacturer's silk screening process that uses ceramic coating with "paint" , they could try but I am confident no corvette owner would find it satisfactory ...

Dave ...
I guess I should have said supplier.
C6 OEM windshields were:
No heads up & no Onstar
Yes heads up & no Onstar
No heads up & yes Onstar
Yes heads up & yes Onstar
The silkscreening for Onstar simply adds a 2 x 11 solid strip on the passenger side interior, which is covered up by the Onstar box. Paint looks identical to silkscreening from the outside.
I'm happy with the no heads up and no Onstar unit that the installer failed to paint before leaving their shop. When they arrived and realized I had Onstar, they painted it on-site. It looks just like OEM and has lasted for 76K miles and over 6 years in the desert heat.

HOXXOH , I can assure you that the all the suppliers carry the different variations in Stock , our locations carry a minimum of 3 each in both aftermarket and OEM brands ...
I am glad that you are happy with the "painted" result and that it has lasted this long as I can assure you that our customers would not be happy with it ......

I think you may have this backwards.
You have a box with two antennas in it (GPS and Cell) for OnStar and you want the absolute best performance you can get.
So putting the box as high up in the car as you can, without sticking an ugly 'wart' on the outside of the car makes the most sense, from an engineer's perspective.
