Took my '13 Z06 3LZ Mag ride, cup wheels and tires to CarMax yesterday. Mileage 11,200. Their appraisal was $44K.
Traded it in on Cadillac ATS (non V, unfortunately), today. Dealer gave me
$46.5
I still have a '17 GS, so guess I'll be hanging out there from now on.
What I like to do is to use all the major appraisal sites and develop an average of all based on trade, private sale and retail. The "Dealer trade" value can depend on the incentives for a new car purchase which may allow the dealer to put more into you trade. For pre-owned purchases the incentives will not be a factor. You may find the value of your trade will be different from different dealers for numerous reasons. If the trade offer is in the vicinity of "private sale" you are in pretty good shape in most cases. At the end of the day you just need to be comfortable with the transaction.
I listed my 012 Centennial Edition on KBB and it stated 47 grand from private seller. The car has 6000 miles on it and is a 3LT GS. That seems kind of high, no?

Most likely the dealer just took the difference off the ATS and put it on your trade to make you believe you were getting more for your trade.
That's why I negotiate the price of the new vehicle first, without even telling them I am doing a trade. Once I lock them in on a firm number I tell them I decided to trade my old vehicle since I wasn't getting the price I thought for the new vehicle. I then negotiate the trade as a totally separate transaction. They hate that because they can't play their numbers game. That way I know exactly what I'm getting for my trade. I get thousands off on the new vehicle, and top dollar for my trade. If they try to lowball me on the trade, I'll tell them I'll walk. They have to many hours on the transaction so they have no choice but to finish the deal.

Already did that. I'm not stupid. This is at least the 35th car I've bought.
