2012 Navigation unit
I was wondering what the plug on the back of the Denso unit is that looks similar to a USB mini plug ? Has 5 pins.
I'm thinking it is some kind of a data port?

It is a USB port so you can connect an external music source.

You need it because the USB connector on the radio is a proprietary connector and this cable is specifically designed for the USB radio. The USB connector is called a "mini-A", which is available in other places, but a regular "mini-A" won't snap into the radio housing without modification.
