I've left the car with the targa off and gone into restaurants and stores before. I'm just not sure how the insurance company would react if some idiot flipped a lit cigarette in there and burned it up. If it got stolen, they may not pay if the top was off/down, and I wouldn't lie about it. It's probably best not to leave it exposed unless you are really familiar with, and sure of your surroundings.
There is no mandate (detailed or implied) with any comprehensive insurance coverage that your vehicle must be completely closed (windows up, doors locked, top on, etc) that would negate a claim.
Had a friend who had a microwave oven that failed. To get rid of it,
[ it was December] he giftwrapped it in a box and left it in
the back of his pick-up for 3 and 1/2 hours while he and his wife
shopped in a busy mall. When he came out, there it was, right where he left it.

What...they don't have trash pickup where he lives????
Left my verts with the top down many times, and only once did I find bird crap in it... Looks like he sat on the windshield frame and let it rip..... Not fun..... But once on a beautiful sunny day went in the grocery store for no more than 10 mins and a pop up storm soaked it...... Luckily the store gave a shout out that it was raining.....
But it still had an inch puddle in the seats..... Took forever for that car to dry out..... Eventually it didn't smell funky.... But it took weeks of parking out in the sun and leaving the top off in the garage.....
Moral to the stories...... Eventually some random stuff will happen....
Do I still leave the top off... Yes.....
Can't worry too much as the top can be cut with a sharp implement. A conv roof won't stop anyone, up or down!
yes I absolutely agree. Plus isn't this what Insurance is for? I mean really what's the point of a convertible if you don't leave it down when you're going in somewhere. If I put my top up and down every time I went into a store or even went to work I wouldn't like it as much. I live in Charleston South Carolina and haven't had my roof up into weeks now. It goes right from my garage to work and back.
I leave it parked with the top down all the time. I know I am fooling myself, but ever since I was a kid and saw a parked convertible, I imagined that there was an invisible force field keeping anyone from reaching into the car. Haven't had a problem.
Eons ago my college roommate vomited into an open convertible in the dorm parking lot

I was referring to both
I did think I read a post that someone left there top off in the rear of the car and someone stole the top but part of the fun of the Convertible or Targa is jumping in with it already down.
I leave it down often, but I don't leave anything in the car loose. I set the alarm so if someone tries to manually open the door, the alarm will go off. The doors and trunk won't open with the buttons without the fob anyway.
I'm still trying to figure out what a "Convertible Targa" is?
Some vehicles have a soft top targa you can put on if you are away from home when it rains. These are vehicles that don't have space to carry the hard top targa.
A targa can be considered a partial convertible like the Corvette coupe, while a fold down top is called a convertible.
