Default C6 Mirror problem - UGHHHHHHHH

I purchased a 2006 C6 Corvette [just a base Corvertte - 6 speed] and I got it with a rear view mirror that has been driving me crazy for about 4 years now. The problem is not the usual 3 pin problem that connects the mirror to the glass but the unit that holds the ball that lets you adjust the mirror so you can see who is behind you.
I've looked for a similar mirror and everything I find has the OnStar button, phone, and a few more but the one that came with the car only has a Mirror and Compass buttons. The part number on the mirror itself is E11015607 [see picture below] but when I search for that all I find are the mirrors with OnStar and Phone, etc.
Has anyone else had a problem like this? I don't like the idea of spending $400 for a new mirror but I'll do if I have to as the mirror becomes useless as soon as you go over a bump on the road and then you are looking anywhere but behind you.
I am going to insert a few pictures to see if I am the only one !!
Pictures are
Front View -
Part Number -
Broken Socket that holds mirror ball
Rear View of the mirror with detached ball
Bottom of mirror-
Rear of Mirror [with radar detector attachment installed]

Front of Mirror

If anyone has any ideas or suggestion I would appreciate the input.

Thanks &
Best Regards

Ricardo

So you're saying the ball/socket no longer functions? The ball doesn't insert into the socket?

It could be rigidly fixed, but that would render it's ability to pivot/swivel pretty much useless. Maybe some engineers will chime in with some options. Building up the socket to accept the ball would be next to impossible when dealing with plastic or forming compounds such as JB Weld. While it could be done, it wouldn't allow the movement/flexibility necessary to force the ball into the socket. The other issue would be the tightness of the socket. Getting it wrong could mean a droopy mirror.

I think I would go with another year's mirror and not think a thing of the extra goodies on the front side. If that really bothers you, it might be prudent to just bite the bullet and go with the OEM.

Man, you've been messing with this problem for 4 years because you want to get a mirror that is exactly, precisely like the one you have? I would have bought (ebay item 311844201859) long ago, and wouldn't have worried about it.

You need a mirror that works more than you need to screw around looking for the identical mirror for your car. Go to ebay and buy the mirror numbered above (or, one of a dozen or so for sale). The extra features you do not have will not work, but so what? You will have a working mirror from a C6, and you will be the only one who knows it is not the right mirror. Then, you can spend the next 4 years looking for the "right" mirror, and driving without the frustration you currently have.

Thanks for the replies.
The OEM mirrors have the OnStar, Phone crap. The reason I haven't bought that mirror is that I figure the wiring that plugs into the mirror would not be the same and then it would be all screwed up and I have to figure it all out.
Thanks, Buckmeister I will try to buy that mirror and keep looking for the "perfect" mirror unless everything works on this one.

Had the same issue, was driving me nuts, the broken mirror came with the recent purchase of the car. Thought the pins needed replacing, not so. Ordered new OEM mirror, without OnStar. Wasn't cheap, at $495.00 + tax, but sure is wonderful having a mirror stay in one place.

Shorebird10,
Don't feel Bad we all have been taken by the Chevy Dealers. That's why I never go there even for an oil change. Thanks for the part # I'll be looking for it to see if it looks like the mirror on the picture I put up. The GM part Number picture that I see on the parts catalog shows as a single light on the bottom of the mirror no the two that I have. For that kind of money I want the correct part. I will post how I end up making out.
Thanks again.

Can you wrap some black (electrical) tape around the ball till the fit is more snug?

Thank you for not smacking me down, Ricardo. I was pretty direct in my reply, and there was no good reason for that.

When you see a mirror online, it will usually show the plugin so you can compare your plug to it. In most cases on our electronics, there is a single type of plug used that works with all option levels. That is done so that they don't have to inventory 4 different plugins for a single model. I am sure you can get something pretty close for not much money, and get what you really want somewhere down the line.

The contact is just microns from being tight enough so tape won't even let me put the ball back in.
Thanks though.

HI,
No problem, You are actually right - I am just a little too concerned about keeping the car original. I should have bought the the mirror you noted. I actually put in bids and they kept jacking up the price. Waiting till the auction get a little closer to the end..... but
Shorebird10 had the same problem and he said that the mirror he got was like the one I am looking for.
I actually only drive the car couple of days a week and the mirror is not as big an annoyance as if I was driving it every day.

Thanks for responding. Don't worry about being direct. I like the advice and your point of view was right on the money! Sometimes I lose perspective.

Thanks again !!

In the old days, I would take a center punch and crater the ball in two or three places and that would do the trick. The ball was metal tho. Give it a try and see if it holds.

I had this problem with another GM product. The mirror housing comes apart very easily. I went to a junk yard, obtained a similar mirror housing and replaced the damaged part for 10.00. Easy repair.
