Default Dash Camera Recommendations needed

Hi All

Wondering what dash cams you folks have used or using. Looking for something simple with nice quality. Prefer to have it just record when driving and stop recording when the engine is off. If that isn't a reality, then perhaps something that is rechargeable and just have an on/off switch. I did some research already but just wanted opinions since I never had the need for one.

Thanks in advance

I purchased 2 of them last year. I installed one in my VW Jetta TDI and the other one on my wifes Chevy Cruze. I looked into what companies like Megellan, Tom Tom and Garmin had to offer.

I ended up buying 2 different brands from AliExpress (China). The units I purchased replace the factory rear view mirror head and look factory installed. They record on a micro SD card and have a touch screen mirror face. Both units also have a backup camera, built in GPS and Blue Tooth phone connectivity.

There are dozens of different applications available, some clip over the existing mirror and some replace the mirror assembly completely. Some are also stand alone strictly dash cameras.

Price wise the domestic units like Garmin or Magellan were very expensive and the Chinese units which were still good quality and loaded with features were about 1/3 the cost of the brand name ones and arrived in less than 2 weeks when ordered.

I purchased the units for a couple of reasons. My wife felt safer with a backup camera feature due to grand kids around cars and ease of parking. She also almost had her car written off when a 4X4 pickup truck backed into her since he didn't see her in his mirrors and put his large trailer hitch through the front grille taking out the rad, a/c condenser, cooling fans and hit the engine with the hitch.

She was fortunate that the fellow who hit her accepted responsibility but if he had not it would have been hard to prove that she didn't rear end him. That is why she wanted a dash cam as well as backup camera.

Both units are hard wired to the cars fuse panel and turn on and off with the ignition. One of the units has the GPS antenna built in the other has a separate GPS antenna similar to the one the OnStar system uses and both also have a crash sensor that prevents the digital recording from being overwritten locking the recording of the event.

I have a BlackVue camera on my Corvette. Bought it from the Dash Cam store in Austin, Texas. They have a website. Really neat little camera that attaches to the windshield up by the mirror. Excellent video and audio recording both day and night. Can be viewed thru internet on website. SD card with loop memory. I would recommend it.

I have a Wasp 9905, tried two cheap ones from China, both sucked. This has loop recording on continuous recording, can be mounted on dash or hang from windshield. Lots of features the cheaper ones don't have.

I have a Falcon Zero F170HD and love it. It can be turned on/off with the cars igniton, gps tracking to review your driving route and speed, has a g sensor in it that will pick up hard bumps and saves that particular video (in case someone hits the car for whatever reason), 3,5, 10 min loops OR continous recording, comes with the windshield mount and a 32gb memory card to boot. I'll PM you a link to it....best of all, $99....which is about $50 cheaper then when I bought mine...they have since come out with a touch screen version which I may look into. I will give them alot of credit too....when I received my order....the windshield mount got busted in shipping (crushed box), I called them, and they sent me two replacements---FOR FREE, no shipping costs or nothing. Check them out.

Go to amazon and search for car dash cams and look at the reviews. You can get a decent one for $150-$200 and have actual reviews from people who use them

Thanks for the info. This is actually for a friend of mine moving forward. Unfortunately the person and her husband that hit her is milking her now and the insurance company with a law suit. Glad it worked out for you and your wife. Truly a very minor fender bender that happened. To me it seemed staged by these two people. Within 2 hours of the accident they had a lawyer. I have zero in this fight but if her Allstate Insurance doesn't step up I will be cancelling everything I have with Allstate.
