Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Opinions
Good Morning, I had my C6 in for a minor repair after a fender bender. They had to paint the left quarter panel and do a full alignment. It was in the shop for a week. Since I am pretty meticulous about my car, I took a picture of the odometer when I dropped it off and again when I picked it up. So... the shop put almost 40 miles on the car and used almost 1/2 tank of gas. It's bad enough that they put 40 miles on the car, but to go through that much gas in 40 miles they had to have been driving it like it was stolen. The shop was recommended by the other drivers insurance...they were paying for it. Any thoughts on what I should do other than rip them a new A#$hole?
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

In a way, they did steal it! I'd confront the shop owner but he was the one driving it I'm sure!

I'd go back to the shop and ask the manager if it had been taken off site for any reason or were they able to perform all the work there. Once I got his answer the miles and gas usage would be my next question.

Sucks. I had a guy joyride my camaro back when. It had a new clutch and freshly rebuilt trans. Guy ran it so hard it messed up a lifter and spun a cam bearing, requiring a rebuild. Before anyone asks; no, the shop didn't pay or admit anything. NO evidence (other than the f*cked engine). I'd raise hell and at least get a full tank. Can't trust anybody these days.

You should have told them you recorded the mileage before they did the work. I'd tell them there is a vehicle data recorder in it as well, so no burnouts. When they know you are paying attention, there's less chance of them doing what they did.

Wish I had told them I had a data recorder. The part that really frost's my a$$ is they record the mileage in and out. They have to know I'm going to look at it.

Generally, work orders at shops have the mileage written on them, when you drop it off, and sign for the work. There is a reason for that. I would read them the riot act, and then report it to the insurance company that recommended them.

Sorry maybe that came off wrong. I have been to plenty of shops (friends own a few) and the mechanics love to take peoples cars and sit inside them to catch some air conditioning or on break. I avoid repair facilities like the plague.

I always make a point of pulling my phone out and making a vid all the way around my car, close ups on the wheels and finish with a close-up of the dash/ mileage, all purposely done in front of the employee.... Just do they know I'm paying attention...

I understand that you are upset, I would be too, you need to talk to whoever is running the show there for an explanation

my guess is they drove it to the alignment shop (and maybe lunch). 20 miles one way.
Not sure about the gas. It's pretty hard to know the amount of gas used just by looking at the gas gauge, too many variable.
Are you happy with the repair?

Did you ask them if they spoke English and then tip them a fiver to take care of your car?
But seriously, you might be able to check with On-Star and see if they record the GPS locations and vehicle speed.
I know what you are going through and these types of things are inexcusable! I dropped off my Mercedes at Les Schwab, I came back to pick it up and it was parked with the front bumper smashed into the curb. WTF? I made them back it off the curb (causing more damage) and it almost ripped off the bumper. I was so mad I could barely keep calm. Needless to say they paid for it, but I had to go through the B.S. to make it right.

That's what I was thinking. A lot of shops do this. I think the best thing to do is let them know up front you won't tolerate someone putting excess mile on your car.
