A guy on midwest corvettes fb site had a c6 that he bought used and brakes went out. Dealer said it was dot 5 in the system and going to cost $8000.00 to repair.

I told him that he was being coned!
4 new calibers , master cylinder and some stainless flex lines and a gallon of dot 4. Flush the system and install parts. Save even more by finding parts at a corvette salvage. That leaves only labor!

What? And the problem with DOT 5 is what?

Dealer said it ate all the seals up. I find it hard to believe!

Midwest corvette owners on fb.

Our Corvette is at the dealer. We were experiencing brake issues at the end of last year. Dealer just called to inform us that the man that owned the car before us put the wrong brake fluid in the car and not only ate through all the seals and ruined all brake lines etc. We are absolutely sick to our stomachs. Not how I wanted to spend $8k this weekend"

Absolutely true. DOT 5 is silicone based and is not compatible with a lot of brake components that are used with DOT 3 or 4 systems. DOT 5.1 is fine.

I imagine the high cost has to do with replacing the ABS and maybe some stability control components.

$8K does sound a bit steep but calculated at dealer parts prices with dealer labor probably is about right.

But, $8K doesn't surprise me at a dealer. They'll take the opportunity to replace everything and, why not, to be on the safe side.

No doubt there will be an independent shop who can do it for less. It's worth calling around and getting a few quotes.
