I purchased some red LED strips that plugged into my footwell light sockets and love them. Of course they only turn on when the dome light is on (so the map lights as well in the rear view mirror). I would like to have the red lights on while driving at night so ideally I would just remove the map light bulbs and just turn on the red lights with the dome light button. My question is: Is it ok to not have bulbs in the map light sockets? I wasn't sure if I could just remove those two bulbs and be done. I tried researching and just kept finding threads on HOW to remove them.
So is it ok to go without bulbs in the map light sockets?

My car is so old I actually have a reddish light that shines down just to the right of the map lights.
I've driven my '09 with the map lights on and, believe it or not, they don't produce the kind of unwanted reflection on the inside of the windshield that the old dome lights did on earlier cars. If it's the color of the map lights that puts you off, pull the bulbs and either try to find red ones or paint the bulbs with translucent red paint. Or leave them out.
