I came home tonight after a drive and pulled in the driveway. I left the car running to move something to pull into the garage and, when I went to shift into reverse, the shifter moved but did not engage (it stayed in park even though it was in the reverse position). It seems very loose and the shifter will move into any position but it won't actually shift out of park. Any ideas?

Shifter cable broke. Do a search and you'll find info on how to fix it.
When this happened to me, I was not (30 miles away). I got a ride home, and it took ten hours to get a tow the next day.
Mine broke at a gas station and I was blocking the pump during rush hour. I fixed it there since I'm too cheap to pay for a tow. I have a thread on this.
I was very lucky to have this happen at home right after I left the airport (1.5 hours away). Thanks for all the input I was able to find the broken bushing and replace it. Back on the road again for a $7 fix!!!
My 98 will not move out of drive.... The shifter moves freely but will not shift out of drive.
I have removed the shifter assembly the shift cable is securely attached.... What could be my issue?
