Taking a long over due road trip with my daughter the end of the month to Duluth,MN and then to the Mackinaw, MI area. Of course we plan on driving over the famous bridge and visiting the Island. Any suggestions on what is a must see and anything to avoid.
That's a beautiful part of the country for a drive. Back in the days when I was married, we'd drive from MPLS to St. Ignace, MI to visit he mother. I haven't been back in there in years. Been to the island many times, lots of tourists, junk/craft and fudge shops. No cars, only horses, bicycles and walkers. Been across the bridge a few times, it's long and way up above the water! Windy days have been know to blow cars or trucks off the bridge.
I'd say try to avoid the island on the weekend...
Take US 2 across on the way there, lots of lake frontage to see. Get out and explore the sand dunes...
Take a northern route back, drive up to Sault St. Marie, MI look at the locks.. follow 28 over Munising, Marquette... If you have time check out Copper Harbor... See the tourist trap in Ishpeming...
Follow the Lake all the way to the Keewenaw / Copper Harbor, then down to Marquette, Munising, Paradise, to the Sault. Beautiful drive up there. Houghton has some great restaurants.

Just a few miles North at Whitefish Point is the Great Lakes Shipwreck museum. My daughter visited there several years ago and it was one of the highlights of her Great Lakes trip. It's on my bucket list. http://www.shipwreckmuseum.com/

driving from Duluth to Mackinac????????
you could take Highway 2 al the way with numerous stops / points of interests along the way................. spectacular scenery and views........and it allows you access to major points of interests or areas................. be sure to check out Marquette........... harbor front area has many views and places to eat............Mackinac Bridge is 5 miles long...............very cool to stop at parks on either side for photo ops............... the island itself is reminiscent of times gone bye, no cars, arrive by ferry so bring comfortable shoes...........some very cool things to see while walking or riding in carriage or bike and some of the usual tourist trap stuff.............very easy to visually differentiate between them.................. the Shipwreck Museum also should be on your list............... take the time to research a bit in preparation, then make stops at places that would interest you the most...............
