Default Sorta stupid question

Due to a lack of long-lasting tires for a GS, I have considered switching to base model tires and wheels. I don't see the additional width of the rears giving substantially better traction than 285's which are cheaper and more readily available. I need AS tires and there are none in 325 sizes that I am aware of.
What kind of spacers would I need to make the wheels fit the fender openings? Am I just asking for trouble?

I only drag race the car once a year, no autocross.

You are asking for trouble.....spacers the size required will cause additional wheel bearing wear. Not to mention wheels may not fit over your rear brake calipers....not to mention the fronts....

Not to mention that I doubt the drag strip would allow him on the track with wheel spacers.

Whoa partner, is your GS alignment factory stock?
If it is then there's the reason your tires are not lasting.
Factory alignments have a camber set-up for racing & cornering when truth is, many Corvettes owners drive normally.
Pissed me off too watching tires melt regardless how gentle they were driven, these tires are not cheap and if NOT 'racing' why would they wear?

Then, I learned about Pfadt Street Spec alignment.
Last set of Michelins I asked Pfadt SS be used for alignment & premature wear is now practically nonexistent.

Before trading down search Pfadt's settings, print 'em out & hi-lite 'Street Spec" & get it. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Yes, inside wears and yes standard come w/ aggressive alignments.
Standing in front of car tires are slightly angled inward, when going around a sharp turn tires will straighten out providing better grip.
In corners.
Worse part's wear's hardly visible w/o actually stooping down for a hard look.

If you can stand 'modern' NASCAR, watch a few events.
Some team's attempt gaining an advantage in turns by setting cambers so wild tires prematurely fail, usually collecting up others due to their moronic attempt.
It's become a tad rarer under their new format, which IMO has ruined a once great sport by eliminating penalties (broken cars/tires) for stupid set-ups over long runs.

Pfadt Steet Specs: http://www.pfadtracing.com/blog/wp-c...-9.12.2011.pdf
Choose the alignment best suiting your need, they're several covering various driving styles/needs.
