Default Adding Steering Wheel Controls?

Hi Folks,

So I was looking at a gorgeous Jet stream Blue '08 'vert over the weekend. It is in amazing shape just like my '09 coupe. Although I love the car, I really don't want to go backwards a year for a few different reasons....the biggest issue is having to add a stereo deck back in that has Bluetooth. But even if I do that, I still won't have steering wheel controls. Does anyone know if all you need is the GM OEM Steering Wheel Audio Control Switch? And if so, how difficult is that to hook up? Thanks!

There are a bunch of threads here and Youtube videos showing what/how to do it but the basics are, new wheel with controls, new clockspring, new harness from clock spring for column and an interface from stereo to harness. Plus I assume you will be adding in at least a back up camera and likely a front parking camera as well. I have heard the go to guy is double D mods.

I just added steering wheel controls to my 2006 a couple of months ago, it was a pretty involved project. Like mentioned above there are a lot of other threads with this information in it, just search, but since you have a 2008 it should be a lot easier for you, I was under the impression that all 2008+ had steering wheel controls? I would guess you should already have the updated clock spring and you should have the wiring in place to go from the steering wheel to the radio, and it's a newer design radio so that should be good to go, so I'm guess you would just need the actual switches for the steering wheel and the harness that goes from the switches to the clock spring (not available separately from GM) You might be better off finding a used steering wheel and just swap the parts. You can PM me with any questions.

2008 3LT and 4LT models had steering wheel audio controls standard, along with the Bose radio.

If the one you're looking at is a 2LT, I don't know if it already has the necessary column harness for the wheel controls or if you would have to add it.

Sorry, I read 2006 (small phone, no glasses) when I responded. Easiest way to find out if you have what is necessary is to take your airbag off and look to see if your clock spring has a plug for steering wheel controls. I can not imagine they would make two different column harnesses and clock springs.

FYI there is a jet stream blue 09 w/ Z51 package for sale in Folsom with Steering Wheel controls, among other things.

And remember that if you were thinking of changing OEM radios to get Bluetooth, that C6 Bluetooth is in the OnStar module, not the radio ...

Thanks. PM me the listing if you have it. I passed on the '08. Too much money to give up for going backwards both mechanically and technologically. And I've had my coupe for almost 5 years now so there is some sentimental value there as well...lol...so it would take a heck of a deal for me to give it up

So you have to keep OnStar active to have BT? Holy crap - I didn't realize that!

no it does not need to be active, it is just the bluetooth module is located in the on Star module ... a lot of folks think it is in the radio ...
