What fob no. is engraved on the back of the fob means nothing as far as the memory options are concerned. It's what fob number that fob was programmed as for the car. Only fobs programmed as #1 or #2 may access the memory options.
Evidently your one and only fob was not programmed for the car as #1 or #2. I almost forgot to mention that problem can be corrected by reprogramming the fob you have. However, since you only have the one fob, I'd suggest that you do the programming in a Chevy dealer's parking lot so he can fix it if the programming gets screwed up. That does seem to happen frequently.
You mentioned "service mode", but I think you meant "memory option mode", right?
