Update from my last post about the external hatchback release switch. Today I was able to replace the switch with the help of Forum members input, and a new switch from Gene at Cultrag. It went easier than I expected. The taillight removal was easy with just one screw holding it in place, and the electrical plug to the switch came off without any problem. The switch removal was easy as well. I took a couple photos of the process.
First was the taillight removal. A T-15 torx was all that was needed.
Second was the switch removal. Unplug the electrical plug, pinch the 2 retaining tabs together, and it's out.
Finally install the new switch in reverse order. Here is a photo of the old switch on the left and new switch on the right. There was nothing wrong with the old switch except the rubber cover wore and deteriorated over time. Without the rubber cover, the push button will not stay in the switch, making it inoperable. And you cannot buy just the rubber cover, you have to buy the entire switch. I got one from Gene at Cultrag.
Nice job! The rubber on mine was fine and all I had to do was clean the grit out of the plunger. That was a few years ago and so far so good.
Thank you. Until the rubber cover just fell off one day, my switch has always worked without any problem. I guess age was the culprit. I also use that switch probably twice as much as the one on the dash, so maybe constant use helped promote it's demise.
