Good morning forum,i have 08 chevy corvette with 70k milles recently my oem alternator died, so i bought from autozone AC delco. After driving around a week i went on car wash to wash the car, after the wash i smelled like burning wires, i opened the hood and see that smoke was coming from my alternator so badly and it was very hot. I shut the car off and after that it didn't start anymore, when i took the alternator out the pulley was spinning only at one direction. After couple days i got new same alternator from autozone and new battery. When im driving now i hear some whistle noice, alternator gets very hot again and starting to smell(scare that its gonna smoke again).I did check the alternator in autozone they said everything is PASS(145 AMP) Also they tested battery with alternator and told me that something is not enough coming or getting from alternator to the battery(Could it be wires???)When you turn everything on in the car v11.3-11.9, but my Voltage doesn't go higher then 13.9-14++ when you driving or pressing gas pedal.
Any suggestions what might couse hot alternator?
Sorry for my English.Thanks
A known pinch point for Voltage is at the Starter. Check for corrosion, clean and use dielectric grease then tighten up.
I opted to bypass this problem area. I bought a 64 in heavy duty copper battery cable. Removed the output cable from the Alt and cut off the connector, seal with heat shrink tube and electrical tape. Attach the new cable and route it to the power point on the side of the eng bay fuse box.
Sometimes when working on the starter cables the plastic starter housing will break so I did not want to risk it.
Also a Billit Tech Alt is a much better option than a remanufactured Alt.
Pic of old cable zip tied under new larger cable. It was pulled out so it could be seen for this pic.
Cable routed along heater hoses to passengers side of eng bay.
Cable going into fuse box. Trimmed fuse box cover so cable goes in with cover closed. There is a factory power point under the little kickout on the outboard side that the cable attches to.
This will eliminate the Voltage blockage at the starter.
