I discovered over the weekend that my '13 Z06 has crate engine. I went to the dealer this morning to check out the history and while they did show it to me, they wouldn't let me record it in any way (no printout or even a photo with my phone).
Does anybody on the forum have access to GMVIS ( or whatever the name is currently) and be able to send me the history of the the work performed and the places it was performed? It would be greatly appreciated.
if you contact Gene Culley at Cultrag and ask him nicely he will probably do it for you...not sure why your local dealer is being like this....you could always try and another dealer and tell them you are thinking of buying this car and could they provide you with the GMVIS...obviously show up in something else

Yes, just find another dealer who is willing to help you out. Can even try emailing folks from the service department at your local Chevy dealer to start. It's not a secret and certainly should not be to any current owner.
If you run the VIN thru google, you find that this was a car that had been for sale at GABRIEL/JORDAN FORD 2400 U.S. HWY 59 SOUTH in LIVINGSTON, Texas 77351 Sold for $47,000 with 26,685 miles. Blade Silver Metallic with Dark Titanium interior. Doesn't say anything else much or when it was for sale. Did you buy it there was was it moved to Tenn thru a auction or something. Wonder if it had a salvage Texas title and was title washed by sending it to Tenn? That may be why they didn't want to show it to you...
You own the car therefore you own the information regarding that car. They cannot withhold that information from you. If it were me I would return to your dealership and DEMAND a printout of the GMVIS. And that would be the LAST time I ever walked through their door.
I bought it from Texas. The title is clean and it has the 5Y/100K powertrain warranty till 11/2018. Don't know why they wouldn't want me to have a repair history, there wasn't anything crazy on it.

Carfax did not show any engine replacement. GMVIS showed a "component cracked" as cause for the engine replacement, so I agree with the valve drop most likely being the cause. I know that 2012-2013 had the problem with rod bearings also, but that would manifest itself earlier than 23K miles. The crate motor is built in 2015 based on numerous time stamps on it.

And my prediction is that the original engine had the not-so-rare valvetrain problem and blew.
I have this site called vehicle history.com. I plugged in your vin. You may want to do the same and read carefully in the Detailed Vehicle History section on the first page.

I'd also take rkj up on his offer.
thanks AO..................... PM'd the OP again this morning, was able to obtain the information he was looking for.
Asked him to send me an email so I can provide him the complete information.
Engine replaced for scuffed cylinder and metal debris from bearings, NOT the "dropped valve" issue so commonly mentioned.
I sent you an email and thanks again for the help! I also want to thank Dennis Fichtner and Gene Culley for their help.
Their reports didn't list the exact cause though. Everything I've read on this forum indicated that the bearing problem should surface within the first 5K miles; little scary that it took 23K
I'm currently at 7K on the crate motor and engine runs great and doesn't use any oil.If anything wasn't done correctly on the engine swap (like they left the old oil cooler in or didn't flush the lines) it hopefully would have already shown on the current engine.
The 3rd owner (who had the engine replaced), also carried some GMPP type warranty. I wonder which warranty was used for the engine - GMPP or the 5Y/100K Powertrain. I still have a year left on the Powertrain warranty that should cover the engine, should the current one also crap the bed.

Sent you the info. and it appears the Powertrain Warranty covered the repairs.
here's too many more miles of smiles and enjoyment with your Z06!
