My car locked me out!!!!
After leaving work today I came out to my 08Z to go home. My key was in the pocket of my gym shorts that was in my backpack. Walking up to my car I opened the truck via the trunk button near the license plate, threw my backpack in the trunk and closed the trunk. I go to open my door and it won’t open. I then realized I must have left my key in my shorts. So I go back to the trunk and it wouldn’t open either. I check both doors and the truck for the next 5 minutes in disbelief. How the heck can I lock my keys in the trunk with a keyless entry. Luckily I had a coworker that didn’t mind driving me all the way home to get my spare. Is this normal or has anyone had this problem?

There was another similar recent post whereas I believe the consensus was that the in car fob detection may not always reach to the very back of the trunk. As in all things electronic, they can be glitchy. You may try this another ten times while having your spare close by and not have the problem. But the minute you are away from your spare, bang, she refuses to let you in.
Glad it worked out though.

I've been (legally) driving for over 50 years and this has never happened to me. That's because the key was either in the ignition or in my pocket. The C6 fob never leaves my pant's pocket until I get home.

Not only is the fob not detected there, the car does not even check for a fob when the trunk is closed, only when people doors are closed.

Spare key hidden outside the car.
Spare fob wrapped in foil, hidden in the trunk.
The ONLY sure-fire way to start the car in an emergency.

I did a similar stunt a few years ago when I ou my golf clubs in the back, with the Fob in the golf bag. Same results as you got. Luckily I had OnStar activated, so I called them and a few minutes later, my doors were unlocked. Since then, I had a spare key made and in my wallet.
I no longer have OnStar activated, so that plan B is not available anymore.
I've not needed to use the spare key as of yet, but I do test it occasionally just to be sure the cable is not disengaged from the lock mechanism.
I do keep a piece of black duct tape over it to keep the dirt out of the key slot.

It happens, that is why I have truck keys hidden under the car!

If you stand the car up on it's butt and lean it towards the driver's side and then shake it a bit, the fob will fall near the antenna in the left rear corner of the trunk. Then you can pop open the hatch.
Having a spare key is a little easier.

There are numerous posts where people have done this. There are also numerous posts on how the FOB interacts with the 5 antennas. The antenna in the rear bumper may or may not be close enough to a FOB tossed in the back for the FOB to hear it. If it does the button works. If it doesn't no amount of cursing will make it work. Also, each of the 4 transmit antennas is used only for the closest button being activated and sometimes not even then. Put the FOB on the driver's seat, lock the doors, and then try to open the driver's door. People think there is a proximity detector or that the FOB is continuously transmitting. Neither could be farther from the truth. Been discussed many times.

Happened to me at work. Son brought me a fob. Simple solution. I had a key cut, put it in my wallet (there is a space for it) and NEVER have the problem again.

Yeah but do you still do it and have you been locked out of your car using that method? Another reason I like the hanging method is that I already have my daily driver fob on my key ring with house keys and so on that I keep in my pocket all the time so another fob in my pocket just don't work out to well+ not caring it in my pocket keeps it looking new. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I have never locked myself out of my Corvette but I can see how this can happen. Unfortunately, the C6 is not smart enough to not lock itself with the smart key inside the car.
My daily driver car (2016 Rav4) it a little better in this aspect. When I open the trunk the driver door will also unlock. If I close the trunk, it does not lock the driver door. If I try to lock the door but it detects the keys are within the cab, it will make a sound and not allow it to lock. This actually happens often. Most of the time it happens when my wife decides to hide her purse in the trunk but she is also carrying the spare key fob for my Rav4 in her purse. I go to try to lock my door and I get the sound.
