Hi all,

I hit a deer doing about 60mph in my 2005 Magnetic Red (86U) C6 the other day. The car is in the body shop now being repaired, but we are having trouble locating replacement headlights. Some of the mounting points are apparently broken and the whole assemblies need to be replaced.

I was told over the phone (GM Parts Direct) that the headlight assembly has been discontinued.

How does someone go about getting a replacement for these? Are we expected to scrap the whole 'vette and get a new one if we break a part which is no longer produced? I have an inquiry in with CorvetteRecycling, but I'm not sure how far that will go.

Maybe a good motivator to upgrade to the C7...

I'm just glad to hear that you are ok. Hitting a deer at 60mph can be catastrophic...even in a big SUV, Let alone a Corvette. Try Craigslist and or local junk/scrap/salvage yards. Good luck.

Watch the aftermarket/used parts sites including Ebay and CL. The market is becoming flooded with parts cars BC of the hurricanes.

From what I understand it's part of the GM bailout deal. No more replacement parts for 10 years after last of that generation ends. The headlights became scarce after 2010. There may be a few old stock lying in some dealers inventory but active choice of colors do not seem to be available.

5 to 13 years old, and the paint colors changed numerous times over the years. Since these lights have a sealed "color matched" part, the inventory needed to be carried would be crazy.

Well, lets say we have a 2013 C6 ... The car is only 4 model years old.

Does GM stock complete replacement headlight assemblies in all the the available 2013 colors?

I read somewhere when I was young that auto manufacturers were required to carry parts for up to ten years after the model ended.

As mentioned above by RL Sebring, that ended with the bailout? What about other companies?

I can add that FCA (Chrysler) does NOT follow the "old traditional" parts available for 7 years after production of a particular vehicle platform ends either, although the parts for a Dodge, Ram, or Chrysler should be more readily available than a Corvette...............

So GM has moved back to the days of built in obsolescence? I had noticed these were no longer available from GM. Good to know a source.

If the car is in the body shop let the insurance company worry about it. Keep driving the loaner until they call you and say its fixed.

The problem is likely that you're looking for Magnetic red ones, which got replaced as a color fairly early.

You could always have the body shop buy whatever color ones they can find, then paint them and reseal them. Or buy some from RLSebring.
