Just wondering how the 2005 rear diffs are holding up and if your stock or modded...
my 05 auto car is modified and ran low 11's with slicks for 12 years and never an issue with it.after supercharging I switched to a new Z06 differential
I've been reading this forum for over 7 years and and have read many times how fragile the 05 rear diff is. I've read maybe 2-3 cases of it actually breaking and those were M6 cars.
Usually it's "using slicks" or getting "wheel hop" that causes the 05 rears to break.. I don't think they're as week as most imagine..WW
Had my M6 car supercharged about 1000 miles ago. I brought this concern up with my mechanic, if I should plan on swapping out the stock diff in the very near future. Since I don't track my car he said not to worry about it....if it happens, it happens, and then replace the diff and the clutch at the same time. He said that if I don't put super sticky tires on it and power shift or get any wheel hop that it will probably be fine. I'll worry about it if and when it happens, or when I need a new clutch, whichever comes first.
05 Z-51 Automatic with 55,000 miles no problems at all. I did replace both axle nuts with the new improved ones and all you have to do is remove the center cap and replace them and tighten down to the proper torque. I have changed the LS gear lube myself a couple times just to keep it in great shape. I have not heard of anyone losing a rear end unless the car has been drag raced often with slicks and horsepower mods.

First time I've heard of axle nut upgrade? Reasons and do you have the upgrade part #?
I've had my '05' A4 since new. Never an issue with the rear or axel nuts. No issues with battery drain either. It's been a great car for over 13 years now.

When the axle nuts become loose the car will make a weird grinding noise when turning sharp corners slow. It is worse when the car is cold. It absolutely does not hurt the car but sounds terrible. GM made some new axle nuts that are a little different style and are only about $7.00 each. All you have to do is take off the center cap, use a huge socket ( I don't remember what size but I can go right to it in my tool box because it is HUGE) and remove the axle nut. I think I jacked the car up on each side first but cannot remember. All you have to do is put locktite on it and you are finished. It takes a whole 5 minutes for each wheel. You will have to do a forum search and there are quite a few articles stating exactly how to do it. I bought my car new and it made the noise under warranty but the dealer couldn't find the problem so i just left it until I figured it out on my own. If your car is making a grinding noise on low speed corners this is most likely your chance for a very easy low cost repair. Your Chevrolet dealer would know which is the new part because they included many other non-Corvette automobiles and GM cars.

The 05 differential is fine under normal and some spirited driving. It probably won't take drag strip 5000 RPM launches for long but if you are a drag racer you need dedicated race components anyway.
The few that have broken an 05 rear admitted they were launching at high RPM and side stepping the clutch and got into bad wheel hop. Give me a break.
I've seen guys shatter Ford 9 inch, GM 12 Bolt and Dana 60's too at the starting line.
Owned my05 since new. 6speed. Even with 600+ rwhp I had no issues, but never beat on the drivetrain. Most “spirited” driving were done “defending”the brand on the interstates.
My new setup makes 800+ and I have swappped in an entire Z06 drivetrain.
