I'm guessing for mods you may have made that will fail certs then he's on the hook to make it pass. It's a 2006 ?? Most emission tests that I've heard of exempt 10 years or older?

Depends on where he lives - emission testing is required in Northern Virginia and goes back 25 years. Presence of emissions equipment is also required for Virginia state inspection.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Bonneville GXP I just had the emissions test a month ago !! It passed no problem !!! I live in Washington state !!! I have a 1970 Chevy Monte Carlo SS 454 but it's old enough so They don't test it !!! Wayne

I once left my battery go dead before emission testing and it took so long to satisfy the drive requirements (yes I know they document the steps but they're not trivial to satisfy) that I can see where he'd be concerned.

If you have HPTuners, you can check that there are no more than X status bits not yet set, and X varies by state. So you can have one or two monitors statuses still not ready in most states.

In air quality non-attainment areas such as Chicago and St. Louis metro east, a successful emissions test is required to renew license plates. There is a test site in Schaumburg.

I'm sure he want's to know if the car passed the last time or if there are problems with the car.

Yes, disconnecting the battery or having a dead battery resets some of the emission parameter status indicators to "not ready" and the car will not pass. You must drive it a while with some number of ignition cycles. A code scanner will show emissions status. I had this issue after replacing a battery. I did not have a check engine light on.

Testing is required 4 years after the model year and then every 2 years.

Don't you live in an area requiring emissions testing?

Ron

As said above it is relative to where you live. One of members used to work at the Crystal Lake, IL facility and he told me that the EPA takes air quality tests, and if an area is a problem, then the testing is required if you live in those areas. If you have removed the cats, you may have a risk here and most likely the reason he wants the test papers. We had a member in our club who bought a ZR1 from a dealer, then failed the test. He went back to the dealer and had them by the male appendages and they had to put a proper exhaust on to pass the testing, or they could be fined for selling in that way.

Many OBD scan tools have an I/M emissions readiness feature that will indicate whether or not it will pass emissions testing. Option if you can't get anything else.

Normal for where I live, since a current passing emissions inspection certificate is required by the seller selling the car, and turned over to the the buyer with the title, so the car be re-titled by the buyer in the end.

makes sense to me. He does not want to inherit your "emmission" problem that keeps you from passing.

When I am selling a car, I go get a smog cert for about $14. Makes buyers very happy.

In CA, the seller is required to have an emission certificate from the past 60 days I believe. When I lived there I never understood why people wanted to buy vehicles from another State. Yes, they are cheaper, but the downside is very bad. When I moved there you had to put up a $200 bond if you brought in a vehicle that didn't have CA emissions, but that was overturned around 2005. I'm pretty sure if your car doesn't specifically have CA emission standards, it doesn't have to meet CA standards, or isn't tested at all. They change rules all the time, so you need to check.

Any used car or motorcycle purchased from out of State has to have a minimum of 7500 miles on it. This was done to keep people from purchasing vehicles out of State that didn't meet CA emission standards. If you are caught trying to register any vehicle that doesn't meet the criteria, its VIN is black listed in the system and you will have 60 days to remove it from the State. Once blacklisted, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. It's a death sentence for that vehicle, and there is no pardon from the Governor to help you. That is why this guy wants the form.
