So who here has done it? Not interested in powder coating, just paint. What kind and walk me through it if you could. Currently have silver painted factory split five spoke wheels. Thanks
I painted the barrels of a friends GS. They were gray, I painted them black. Just cleaned, masked off, and sprayed with Krylon normal paint. 2 or 3 light coats. Took more time to mask off what I didnt want painted than anything else. It was a pain, but they looked great when I got through. They were chrome though, not painted silver.
As long as they are painted wheels and not plated, it is just a good cleaning to get all the brake dust, grim and grease off. Maybe rough them up a little mask and paint.
I'm considering using this Dupli-color black chrome paint kit on my 2008 5-spoke polished wheels that came clear-coated from the factory. I'm wondering what I have to do to make sure this works and I don't end up having a big mess on my hands like the new spray reacting with the present clear coat and crazing or something like that. I'd like to do this without removing the tires.
The reason I want to make my wheels darker is because I want to do my roof and halo in a gloss carbon fiber look and I think the polished wheel will not look well with the new look of my car that the dark roof will give it.
Is there another way to approach this? I'm open to suggestions to what I can do to the wheels. I think there is some sort of spray-on flex-coating that can be removed later without damaging the original surface, but I don't have any experience with that either and don't know how well that sort of thing works.
I have repainted C6 wheels in the past. As others have stated, clean and then rough up the finish by sanding with 400 grit. Then apply two light coats, let dry overnight and apply several more coats. Now here is the key, after the final application of paint has completely dried, wet sand the finish with 1000 and then 2000 grit sandpaper. The finish will then be smooth as silk but dull from the sanding. Then spray the wheel with clear coat paint and allow to dry. You can then lightly wetsand the clear with 2500/3000 grit and follow with a product like Meguiars compound or machine glaze, both available from Wal Mart. The whole process will take several days, but they will look like a factory finish. Good luck!!

I have a set of GS wheels on the hook that are alloy not chromed, and I want to paint them gloss black, don't want to make them perfect by wet sanding and all that, just glossy black.
Bus as one said I don't want to start and wind up with a big mess, I've looked at YouTube and not much there that is any different than what I would try, scuff with a scotchbrite pad, primer, then apply 3-4 coats of gloss black, afterwards apply a coat of clear enamel, sound good ????
Advice welcome

I actually plan to do this Tuesday. My chrome wheels have the gray finish flaking off the barrel on the RR. Problem is, you do one wheel, you gotta do them all.
Paint and clear coat with cleaning and sanding in between. May take pictures as I go. Masking off the wheels will be the worst part.
I used this straight out of the can for the barrels when I had chrome https://mobileimages.lowes.com/produ...0066727789.jpg
It mimics the raw metal finish pretty darned close
Hey Vet and any others doing this project please document and with photos as you go OK
Thanks

That paint does not work like you might think.
The paint will not stick to the clear coat as well sa if you have them sanded.. As for the black chrome pint kit, I bought the same kit a few years back.. Mu black chrome wheels were fine, nut the plastic center caps were reeling, so I order a new set and tried the paint. Never can close to matching the wheels. Either to dark or to light. In your case as long as you rough the wheel it will be fine as far as shade, but it will not look anything like black chrome.
