People have died swerving to avoid an animal. It isn't worth it.
You can try to slow down if you have time, but never ever swerve to keep from hitting it. You'll end up hitting a tree, another vehicle, or crashing your car into a curb at 50 mph. No dog, cat, deer, or squirrel is worth your life or severe damage to your vehicle.

It's easy to say "Dpn't swerve" for an animal. The reality is that "swerve" is one's first instinct.
However the accident happened I hope it turns out in your favor.
