I have found it difficult to air my tires to the correct PSI using the onboard PSI indicators. Are these inherently inaccurate ?

They don't sample often enough to use them to tell you when to stop when filling.

You should use a hand-held gauge to fill, and then check to see what they are actually reporting. That way you know exactly how accurate they are.

Your altitude also makes a difference; generally they don't read as close to a hand-held the higher you go.

Use a quality gauge, inflate cold tires to spec, drive a bit, wait a while until tires again cold, check TPMS pressure.
I like this Pro Products analog gauge because it never needs a battery:

Just use TPMS to tell you when there is a low tire. You should use a good gauge to air up the tires.
