How a person drives or treats their car has nothing to do with whether they can afford it or not. These are two mutually exclusive concepts. Jay Leno, a very famous car collector, has more money than he can spend, but I bet he doesn't put more than a few hundred miles on his Corvettes in an entire year, if that.
He'll if Leno drove 12 hrs a day and a difference car every hour he couldn't put a couple hundred miles on each car in a year.
But I agree that comment was dumb. About as dumb as criticizing how many miles one drives their car. Who cares? The only true factor is if they enjoy it, not how they enjoy it.

I bought my 2006 convertible in May 2014 with 45K miles. I've put about 10K miles on it each year since.
I live in Northern Minnesota and the car sits in the garage under cover 5-6 months a year so, yes, I drive it.

I spend a lot of tike in the Bigfork/Marcel area. 38 can be a fun road.
I bought my '12 GS in December. I thought I'd put 3k to 4k miles a year on it. So far I've put 2,300 on it in less than 4 months. I do try to keep it nice. I wash it at least once every two weeks and have waxed it three times. Can't stand to see it dirty. This is my first Vette at age 68.
I put 125,000 miles on my last Vette and I intend to do the same with my current 2006. For me the joy of having the car is driving’s it. I bought wheels from a guy that has a 2012 with 3000 miles on it. He takes it around the block on a nice day. I just don’t get it.
