Man, am I ever pissed!
I took my C6 to the grocery store today and, after I got out and went around the back to get the shopping bags (thanks CA legislature), I saw a huge smear of dirty grease about the size of a dinner plate on the passenger side roof. I carry dri-wash and rags in the car, so I began removing the mess. The black crud was partly dry and had the consistency of what you find on old transmissions and engines when they have been leaked on and then collected lots of road grime. When I finally got all the grease off the car I could see that there were about six or seven deep scratches in the paint. Some ******* had taken a heavy, greasy, dirty piece of steel and dragged it across my roof. Since the car is always kept in the garage, I couldn't believe that this had happened. It was clearly vandalism, but when could it have taken place? Then it struck me. On Monday I opened the door to the garage and my double wide door was wide open. I assumed that I must have triggered the door with the remote I keep in my watch pocket. This is a fairly upscale neighborhood, so I thought nothing of it. I'm betting that the punks who live across the street from the side of my house (I have a corner lot) did it. Everybody in the neighborhood complains about these little wanna be thugs. They probably saw my garage door open and decided to leave me a little present. I'm feeling in the giving mood in response, but the only thing that crosses my mind is a couple of blasts from my 12 ga. pump gun. I've also thought about getting a can of paint remover and pouring it over the head thug's BMW 3 series coupe. The one without a legal muffler that he warms up outside my window every morning at 7:15 am. Any less dangerous ideas?

I'm feeling your pain right now. Today a coworker rammed, albeit accidentally, her door into my passenger side door.
She hit right at the crease and it flattened it. In order to fix it, the paint guys will need to blend the front fender as well as nearly the entire door to get it right.
I'm cringing at the thought of a job done at anything less than perfect.

Cameras, as covert as possible, they might have cameras too, possibly your friendly neighbors have cameras that caught some video.

Unless you know for a fact that they did it, I would not try and retaliate. See if any one around your house has any security cameras that may have caught something.

Not that revenge is always the best idea, but way back when in my teenage years when some jackass thought he was being cool by pi$$ing in the front seat of my 70 Nova (just because I beat him fairly in a drag race and he lost a bundle) I decided to get even with him.
What you need:
1 windshield washer reservoir, pump, hose, and nozzle (easily obtained for cheap at any junkyard from any car).
12 guage wire
1 toggle switch
Enough super strength paint stripper to fill the reservoir.
Rig the reservoir in your trunk, and run the hose & nozzle out under the fenderwell (careful to mount it so it doesn't accidentally spray your own car). Run the 12 gauge wire to the toggle switch and to a 12V source.
Drive VERY slowly past the car, toggling the switch on just before you get to it, and paint the side of it with the paint stripper.
Drive away as if nothing happened.
All done in Mexico of course......
Disclaimer: I don't think revenge is a good idea. This posting is just a reminiscence from my teenage years when electronic surveillance did not exist, and I was too young to think about consequences. That is all.

Just don't do it! No matter what you may be thinking - DON'T DO IT
Look, even if you had incontrovertible proof, to retaliate in kind would be foolish. The consequences when YOU get caught are unthinkable.

I was thinking the same thing.
OP, it may or may not have happened like you think. I wouldn't get myself in trouble with absolutely no proof. My first question would be why would anyone bring a greasy piece of steel to your place to drag across the roof instead of just keying it if damage was their motive.

Commercial trucks are notorious for for parts falling off on the road. The grease you described fits road debris from another vehicle. It could have been a big glop of grease hitting your car while you were driving. Revenge makes you no better than they are. Good advice earlier, don’t do it.

Is there any chance that something in your garage may have caused this damage? If not, and you feel certain that this was an act of vandalism, you might consider filing a police report and explain your theory/thoughts to the police. Who knows, others may have been victimized in your area and/or this could be the beginning of further acts of criminal mischief. It can’t hurt to have a report on file. I too would be very angry, but as others have said, retaliation could result in serious troubles for you. Good luck sir. I hope the damage is repairable.

Could have come from your garage door when raising. The chain or whatever could have deposited it there. Probably not since there were scratches

Unless you saw him do it you just can't assume he did it. Don't lower yourself.

Like someone said earlier; could the grease have fallen off of the worm drive or chain of the garage door opener?
That or the road debris idea seems most logical.

Sorry to hear about the damage, really sucks, especially if it was vandalism.
A lot of good advice given already. No matter how 'positive' you are he is the likely suspect, unless you or someone else saw them or they were captured on someone's security camera, it's only an assumption, an educated guess and you could be wrong. As already stated, I would still file a police report explaining your suspicions and talk with my other neighbors to see if they've experienced anything similar.
Although revenge may sound sweet, it's never a good idea; it can lead to things escalating, getting out of hand and someone getting hurt or worse.
