Default Power Source for Dashcam?

Hello all,

Title basically says it all. I've seen a "mirror tap" for power for a radar detector, is there something similar that can be used for a dash cam? I'd like to keep the wiring neat and not have to hardwire it behind the radio if possible. Can the mirror wiring provide enough power for a dash cam?

Car is an 08. I also have an aftermarket stereo in it with no Onstar... would that big Onstar brick on the windshield have some kind of switched voltage source going to it that I could intercept?

Thanks.

I used one of these and wired it in the fuse box in the passenger footwell, using a tap a fuse.

. It was simple to run along the top of the windshield, down the passenger side A-Pillar then to the footwell. Took maybe 10 minutes and is totally hidden.

But, I'd think you could use a similar piece and wire to the mirror tap. The issue I'd see is that the cable is really long and it'd be pretty hard to hide it all up by the mirror. There is also a converter box that you could try to hide near the onstar box on the windshield.

I have used a few fuse Taps on mine already. Here is a diagram I circled a few in red way back for a 12v switched source. Located in the passenger footwell

You can use the mirror tap to power your dash cam, they don't draw too much current.

If you have a long cable you need to hide, you can remove both visor clips and then easily loosen/pop off the windshield header trim.

There's plenty of room behind the trim to hide the cable and make a tidy install.

Here's the pin-outs for the connector on the mirror if that'll help.

I used a fuse tap and connected to the heated seats.
