Default Tire age?

My original tires on my 2007 base are showing some cracks in between treads. Tread still 3/4 deap. I am not sure if They should be replaced or if I can put odf a year. Also are tires that have been stored in climate control area that are 6 years old safe to install? Thanks i have seen some say no older than 10 years but it all depends on storage situation.

I tried a few years ago, to get a local tire shop to install some almost new, Michelin high perf tires.
they looked almost brand new, but based on the date code, the shop would not install ( 7 or 8 years old I think ).
if they are showing any cracking, replace!
when hitting an off ramp at "speed", how confident are you with them?
another reason to get these cars out and on the road!
better to wear them out then, to have them waste away.

I've run with tire that had minor surface cracks between the tread but would not "push" them. If they are run-flats you should be able to get to a repair shop.
Here in NY (Suffolk Co.) they just passed a law forbidding retailers to sell tires that are more than 6 years old. I have seen previous attempts to pass a law that would require you to replace tires more than 6 years old in order to pass our annual inspection--these attempts have failed to pass.

I had several hot rods over the years that would go many years with the same tires due to low mileage. But at the first sign of weather cracks they would get new shoes. Weather cracks mean the rubber is finally breaking down due to age. Replace them......

Thanks, I hear you about needing to drive them. I bought the vette with 14k on it last winter. I plan to put about 6k a year on it because of our seasons and i have a couple of cars i rotate on nice days and wknds. Do you think tires from 2011 that were never mounted and stored indoors are worth saving the money and buying or should I hold off and replace with new. I would save about half? Thanks for the input.

Why are you so cheap? There's something to be said for being thrifty, but this is excessive.

When you finally get around to replacing the original rubber, you'll see you've been depriving yourself.

Other than my 05 Vette I also have a 1978. I replaced the tires sometime in the mid-90s.

Goodyear Eagles. They still look new. No cracks. No nothing. They have always been garaged. Probably about 3-4000 miles on them. I scream down the expressway with them.

I had a blowout on the left front of my Duramax pulling my toy hauler to Bikeweek. Not a lot of fun changing a tire into traffic on I-10 west of J'ville.

When we examined the blowout, we found cracks between the tread. The sidewalls looked fine. I had never seen that nor had it occurred to me before.

Meh, I won't be "borrowing" you anything. There are lots of things to go cheap on in life and tires are not one of those things, in my opinion. You can get very good new tires that will handle well, be safe, be quiet, and have good tread life for $800. Over the lifespan of a tire, that seems pretty inexpensive to me. But maybe I'm just a baller haha.

here is some information for those who are interested.....................

Carmakers tell consumers to replace tires six years after their production date, regardless of tread life.
Tire manufacturers such as Continental and Michelin say a tire can last up to 10 years, provided you get annual tire inspections after the fifth year.

YOUR car, YOUR life potentially at stake, YOUR budget....................... choose accordingly to YOUR priorities............

I would definitely recommend replacing 11 year old tires unless you never go above 40 MPH. How much will it cost if you end up in a wheelchair or someone gets hurt? Or worse.

x2...tires tend to degrade from the inside out..if its showing its time to replace them. 4-5 yrs is typical for a "safe" age
Mine are 5 yrs old, tread is like new but if ones looks close...signs of dry rot and they are getting hard, so they are going in the trash.
Cheaper than having one come apart (can happen at any speed) and take your 1/4 panel out or worse.

M/T on my other car are also 5 yrs old, have 30 miles on them. They are getting replaced...and certainly dont "have money" but its better than the alternative btdt
Had one blow out big time & the tread unravel 2 yrs ago going 20mph did some damage

Ok, yes I do plan to change the original tires especially now that I noticed these cracks. I was mostly wondering if unmounted tires from nov 2011 would be worth purchasing for 700 for the set. They were stored in climate controled area and are michelins. If its not a good idea I will just wait and purchase new. I just do mot want to waste my money and unfortunately I am on a budget at this time. I am leaning toward waiting and buying new as most people have suggested. Thanks for the replys appreciate the feedback.

I would not buy used 7 year old tires at all, let alone for $700 and put on a car that has the capabilities of the Corvette. For not that much more money you can get a new set.

I would not be screaming down the driveway on 20 year old tires.

The lawyers for tire manufacturers say 5 years, or whatever, to cover for liabilities. (CYA) Of course, the average car is driven 12-15K miles annually and damn few people ever get 60-75K miles out of a set of tires.
You also have other maintenance things that tend to be expressed in calendar terms by different sources, since very few of the users have any other method to determine an alternate method or the point of failure.
While you may possibly drive your 6K miles for the next two years without a problem under the right conditions or they could fail today. There is no failure date or mileage limitation that exceeds your best judgement.
Other than wear, tires mostly fail from heat and lack of humidity because the rubber becomes dry and brittle.

If the tires you have in storage are the correct size, running them for a couple years might be a more prudent choice than continuing on the OEM tires. New ones are obviously the best choice.

Buddy, if you wait until you see cracks in the tread or sidewall, you should draw a will, and buy short term life insurance, because you are likely to have a very bad accident. You should have replaced your tires about 4 years ago. There is a tire code on the sidewall. It is not there so you can add 10 years, and be okay.

And, you can get a brand new set of tires for $800, with free mounting...
