Default Low voltage

I have a 06 with 93,000 fun miles on it, this is a daily driver so it's not sitting much. Well I went to go for a ride the other day and doors would not open with the FOB. Used the key to open the trunk to get the door open. Got in and the dash read no FOB detected. So I held the FOB close to the dash and it started, thought it was bad batteries in the FOB, so off to the store for replacements. I was watching the dash volts and they never made it to 14.1 like normal. The volts were reading between 12.8-13.9 on the way back to the house. Then this morning doors would not open again. My question is it the battery , which is about 4 years old, or the alternator? Is there a way to test the alternator while it’s still in the car?

The cheap and dirty shade-tree method is to check across the battery terminals with the engine off and note the voltage. Repeat with engine running, and if you have a couple of volts higher then the charging system is probably okay.

Take the battery out and take it to a local auto parts store and let them test it under load. That will tell you if its good or not.

You don't even have to take it out. Auto parts stores will load test it for free.

Just a update on the "service charging system light" after checking everything that was to be check according to all the post on this subject, I swap out the alternator I bought from O'Rileys for a true GM alternator from the dealer. After the swap the message went away.
