Default Workshop Miami, Florida.

I live in Miami, Florida, I have an automatic Vette 06 and I have to change the harmonic balancer, it is a job that is rated 4.6 hours by GM. I have called 3 specialized workshops in Vettes and the one that least charges me, has it in 6 hours at $ 120 / hour and I feel cheated. I'm looking for a workshop that is real and fair both in hours and in price.
Thank you.

Just had my harmonic balancer (HB) changed here in Fort Myers, FL

Labor cost was $550 plus the 6% tax = $583 (Labor is taxed here in Florida)

As for the parts ... Don't buy an OEM HB ... It will more than likely fail later on, just like the OEM HB you now have that has failed.

Get this HB instead .... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/p...model/corvette

You will also need a new HB bolt and you should replace the front crankshaft seal (simple replacement)

I read just about every HB post on here before I swapped mine myself (for a hundred bucks). And many of them said they were paying $1200 for the job. So not sure if you are really "cheated" at $700 labor. You don't need a corvette-specific shop for this repair. Just a good, honest one.

The problem is not the hourly labor price, the problem is that they want me to charge between 6 and 8 hours for a job that GM rates in 4.6 hours.

I'm not going to defend the dealer, but where did you come up with 4.6 hours? If that's GM warranty time, then expect it to increase by up to 40%, warranty is not the same as customer pay book time. And if the 4.6 is from a real labor time guide, you can always ask the dealer what the extra 1.4 hours is for...

I think the GM non-warranty book time is 7 hours. Call a dealer to confirm.

IIRC the only times I've read of labor time being anything less than 6 hours is from an indie shop that does lots of them. Redline might very well be one of them. Or Valone, or SS.

You probably know that labor rates vary quite a bit betw. dealers and indie shops---I am not surprised at $120+ for a dealer, and a little less by possibly 25% by an indie shop (but not necessarily).

It comes down to what you want, can pay, and who you trust. At the very least, you could ask for more info about the shops, do your own conversation with them.

Or actually look on here through an advanced search (red bar at top of C6 General) for word search, go to advanced search, on left where it says key word, fill in harmonic balancer replace cost time labor, etc. (words you can think up yourself), limit it to C6 and don't limit the time---let it go for one year.

Or, you can go to the regional forum on CF for Florida which would be in "upcoming events" "southeast" and search there, or post a thread as to who, what shop, near or far to your location, etc.

Good luck.

The problem is not money, all businesses have the right to charge what they want and all customers have the right to hire it. My problem is that if an official concession rate a specific job in X, an independent specialist workshop will give it to me in X + 2/3 until 9 hours have come to me. If I feel cheated, I do not trust in consuming your product, that's the only problem...
