Once you have the DTC #, post it and the correction should be a shape in most cases.

A CAN-enabled scan tool can read DTCs and do other monitoring.
A code reader just spits out the stored code and allows you to delete it.
I own and have no issues with any of these:
1-A simple $10 Amazon code reader kept in glove box.
2-A $100 Autel AL619 scan tool. Does domestic and foreign and the reason I got that model....reads airbag (SRS) and brake (ABS) codes as well.
3-A $250 Tech 2 clone from AliExpress
To many times PPI will come with so much wrong on a vet, no amount of discount offer will end up with you breaking even after repairs.
Hell, before even a PPI, get the vin number to pull a carfax and GM service history report on the car to start with. These two will tell you if the car is a problem child that you even want to look at to begin with or not, then if they check out, the car looks good in person, then PPI at a shop you can trust before you start talking price.
And is not just private sellers that I will do all the above, but even when buying a used vet from a GM dealer as well (third party shop that I trust to do the PPI as well).
Bottom line, when a C6 has problem, its not a cheap fix even if your doing the work, and if you are paying someone else to do the work, gets in the thousands of dollars quickly instead.
