Default Service light

2008 corvette with a service light on and no codes, can not reset service light. Any ideas on what this could be, thank you.

If the CEL is on there is a code stored in the computer. You may need a higher level (Tech II type) scanner to read the code if it is not a P (powertrain) code.

Yep, standard code candi readers can not read down to the Body/ECM type levels to read/pull the codes there, so you need to use something like a Tech II to pull such codes in the first place.

Once you have the DTC #, post it and the correction should be a shape in most cases.

So what's a decent scanner to get? Going to look at a 08 c6 on Wednesday, like to know what the code is before making an offer.

The Tech II mentioned is a GM specific scan tool that does more than your generic scanners. Do a search. Thousands of $ for a real one. About $250 for a clone shipped from China.

A CAN-enabled scan tool can read DTCs and do other monitoring.

A code reader just spits out the stored code and allows you to delete it.

I own and have no issues with any of these:
1-A simple $10 Amazon code reader kept in glove box.
2-A $100 Autel AL619 scan tool. Does domestic and foreign and the reason I got that model....reads airbag (SRS) and brake (ABS) codes as well.
3-A $250 Tech 2 clone from AliExpress

Honestly that is one big rabbit hole. You can get a clone Tech II for ~$250 on the internet, but that might be a waste of money if you are not working on the car yourself. If the car is a private sale then I would insist on having it taken to a shop and having the code at least read by them so you know what you are dealing with. If it is at a dealer, their service department should be able to do it.

Get an indy shop you trust to a tip to tail pre-purchase inspection on the car before you may any type of offer.

To many times PPI will come with so much wrong on a vet, no amount of discount offer will end up with you breaking even after repairs.

Hell, before even a PPI, get the vin number to pull a carfax and GM service history report on the car to start with. These two will tell you if the car is a problem child that you even want to look at to begin with or not, then if they check out, the car looks good in person, then PPI at a shop you can trust before you start talking price.

And is not just private sellers that I will do all the above, but even when buying a used vet from a GM dealer as well (third party shop that I trust to do the PPI as well).

Bottom line, when a C6 has problem, its not a cheap fix even if your doing the work, and if you are paying someone else to do the work, gets in the thousands of dollars quickly instead.
