Permanent 2005 Column Lock Resolution from GM

The module was replaced 8 times and I put two of the bypasses in; still had failures...one failure of the OEM module was 47 days after the 12 month warranty expired, so there was another $700 out the door...I gave up on the bypass since it failed twice.
JMHO, if GM issued the fix in a TSB, I would have the fix done and then, if it failed again, it should be on GM's dime to fix it again.

It took the tech 2 hours ( like Paul the Corvette Mechanic indicated ) and they charged me $560.
This was the first one they have done, but they seemed very pleased with GM’s fix for the C6. They noted that they wished GM had as good of a fix for the C5.
Overall Happy with the the service there, but I thought it was a little high priced. I guess GM has to pay for the engineering fix somehow.
Problem finally fixed. 🙏

Melting Slicks
I have the bypass in my car, its been in for about 3 years now with no issues till now, all of a sudden the SCL message will not stay off I can push the reset an it will go off but come right back on 5 mins later. The car runs fine with it on but its very annoying when im trying to read other car gauges like oil temp, coolant temp, oil pressure.
I took it to the dealer about a week ago they told me $700 to fix it and said nothing about the fix described in the video.

Did you buy the new column lock plate or just cut the teeth off the old one?
Can this reprogramming be done with a Tech 2?

Just need to pull the steering wheel and clock spring off to change out the old locking plate parts with the # 26049186 plate and #0564191 ring,
https://www.diyauto.com/manufacturer...ement-by-csnow
Then subscription to Ac/delco TDS for $40 for your car ( if you don't have Tis2000) to reflash the control module.
Trust is, I have the steering column eliminator already in play, so with the steering lock out of play, will just reflash the control module alone isntead.
But yes, took GM long enough to come with with the reflash for a steering column lock module that always had problem over and over again.

Yep, the steering column lock are plastic worm gear driving, don't last long before they start to bind up to cause problems, and total ***** show all the way back to the C5's.
So if you drive the car, would end up having to either replace the lock (or pull it apart to clean the worm drive gear and regrease it) every few years as even a new one had problems again, or just by pass the lock in the unlocked position with a lock eliminator isntead.
At least you can disable the lock with the new mod'd lock ring if it does stick in the locked position (so you don't have to pull it), and go in and program the lock out of the car now. As for why now with the programming route, guessing that GM is not long planning on stocking the steering column locks, so the program method helps them to solve the problem on future repairs.

Contacted our local dealership in Easton, MD (Hertrich). They DO have a corvette specialist. They were aware of the Nov 14, 2018 column lock TSB issued by GM #18-NA-346. The "Correction" box on TSB states: "Replace the steering column lock plate (1) with the new plate (2), and update the BCM with the new utility file". Mentioned to service manager I only wanted the TSB addressed and to not include the standard $110 initial diagnostic test (since we already know what the problem is and the on board diagnostic system is not throwing any other codes). So, the dealership ordered the two required replacement parts ($30.49) and scheduled the service three days later (April 25, 2019) to allow for parts delivery. Arrived at dealership 8:30AM, work was completed at 11:50AM at a total cost of $414.82. After service (on dealership paperwork) "no error messages".They did a superb job! So far, no "Service Column Lock" on DIC. I did install a column lock bypass about two years ago and it slowly fizzled out until the car would not start. Installed a second one two weeks ago and the next day started receiving "Service Column Lock" . The installed column lock bypass was not a problem when dealer performed TSB corrective work since the BCM utility file update completely circumvents the column lock and associated electronics. I am so thankful for the feedback and guidance of Corvette Forum members who started this thread and posted the TSB from GM (found in posting #44). I already feel tremendous relief that the problem has finally been rectified. Fingers crossed.

Nope A4 does not have this problem, but isntead shifter cable grommets that wear out so the end of cable pops off to to leave you stranded, or shifter solenoid switch that you have to replace or at least pull the shifter apart to bend the rod a touch more outwards to get the shifter out of park instead.

Got the fix done on mine this past Tuesday. 380.00 and all is well. Glad not to be concerned with that as a problem anymore.
