I've recently run into the problem of not being able to start my 09 A6. The fob is recognized and when I press the start button, I hear a single click(sounds like its coming from the starter) but no start. The dash will then light up as if the car has been started but I can't even get it to try to turn over. I tried a new battery and still am having the same result. Im thinking its time to pull the starter and possible replace it or even the solenoid. I hear that I may need to remove the passenger side catalytic converter to do this. Is this all I will need to do?

Good chance that the positive cable connection at the starter may have gotten fried which will mean replacement of the starter. Happened with my ZR1 a month or more ago. The bad starter connection would not allow my battery to recharge. Covered by my GMPP extended warranty. Dealer said that the right side exhaust had to be removed to R/R the starter on my ZR1 so might be the case with your A6 as well.
Just got the starter off and found the problem. Solenoid boot was completely broken off. I was also able to get the starter out without having to remove or loosen the passenger side cats. Hopefully it’s just as easy to get the new starter back in. I’ll update when done

recently replaced my starter as the solenoid had melted due to headers.
