Does anyone have a recommendation for a good shop in the Tampa Bay area for powder coating a set of wheels? I considered painting them but that is a lot of sanding and prep. Is there any advantage to this process or would painting be a better choice?
What type of wheels do your currently have. Chrome will need to be really sanded or the paint will never stick. Aluminum or painted wheels will only need a rough up to the paint to stick. Have you looked into the Plastidip or Superwrap. both can be done with out any prep work (cleaning is needed of course) and they are both removable. Powder coating is supposed to be much better then painting. I live in the Tampa Bay area and googled it and found a few different shops that do it. I got prices that ranged from $350-$700
If you sand your chrome it will be destroyed forever and you will not be able to get it back. Plus, unless done well (a lot time involved) sanding marks will show thru since aluminum scratches very easily. Dupli-Color, as I recall has a kit in a box for about $20 that, according to the video, will bond to chrome very nicely. I watched a video on how to black tint chrome for a black chrome effect.
Plastidip is a good temporary fix to ensure that you like it. I did mine two years ago, and just respray once a year or so and it looks great. I like the flat look of the Plastidip and it is super easy.

I never though of the Dupli-Color Shadow kit. I have reproduction Z06 wheels on my '07 and they are black chrome. I was thinking of going with a gloss Plasti-Dip or a product called Superwrap. I have the Dupli-Color kit I bought some time back to try and make the new center caps look like the wheels, but it was always to dark. I may try this kit on my wheels to see it I can get them a lot darker then the currently are.
wheels are painted so chrome is not an issue. for me.
