If you are looking at those, you may as well toss in Mustangs as well. I personally find them to be a better overall car than the Camaro. But in general, go out and test drive a few, and go with what you like. Yes, a Challenger is big and heavy and bloated and doesn't turn well, but it still turns a lot of heads pulling up to a restaurant.
And I'll probably be the only one who states this, but if the wife is insisting on an auto, that presumably means she will be driving it as well. Buy the auto, or be prepared for the inevitable complaining and hatred of the car that will come with it, regardless of the model. I didn't particularly want an auto, but my deal was too good to pass up, and I've been pleasantly surprised at the interest that my wife has shown in driving it this summer since she is actually capable of doing so.

She learned as quickly as anyone can -- and she was SO PROUD that she could drive a stick she had to make sure all her GFs knew.
RIP, Denise.

If your wife wants an auto maybe she doesn't want your hand manipulating car controls when it should be punching other buttons? Just what kind of date night are we talking about? Better get the Camaro or Challenger if you need the seat to lay all the way down.

ALL old men are filthy.
Don't ask me how I know.
I remember being 18-20 and working with "old" guys who were 50-60. Some of the stuff they came up with, and said, about sex were mind-blowing. Me and my buddies thought: WTF is wrong with these old coots? What do THEY know about sex, and where are they getting all this kinky stuff from?
Now I am one of those "old" guys.

For that price I would go 2015-2017 Mustang GT. The Challenger is a fat pig snooze car sans the Hellcat obviousy. The Camaro still looks like a cartoon car and I wasn't impressed driving it. The Corvette is well, you know amazing. So either Mustang or Corvette. Very different cars and I have both and like them for that reason.

Unless it's going to be her car, I can't imagine entertaining an automatic. Get what You want, and take Her out on date night. Isn't that the point?
If she just wants a second car to drive herself, get a Mustang.

Serious question here. What is up with everyone recommending a Mustang? I know they have gotten better, but it loses pretty much every head to head comparison, track times, etc. to the 6th gen Camaro. What is up with all the Mustang love. I have never driven or ridden in one, just curious?
FWIW, I traded my C7Z for an '18 ZL1 and I do not miss the C7Z at all. The 10 speed in the Camaro with the LT4 is amazing! The A8 in the C7Z is abysmal at best. To the OPs dilemma, both these cars were my wife toys so they had to be auto. I doubt I would feel the same way had the C7Z been a M7, never driven one of those either.

I just bought my C6 for less than you're quoted budget. I've driven all three of the cars and if you had kids and needed a DD i'd say look at a challenger. But for a purpose "date car" I'd go corvette. As others have said, the camaro is really difficult to see out of. The mustang is a lot easier to live with daily but again, you said you wanted a special occasion car. I'd lean Vette for that purpose.

It has nothing to do with head to head comparisons, like everything else in life it’s personal preference. To me the Mustang is hands down a much better looking car than the Camaro...inside and out. The Camaro body designers were fantastic but the interior designers totally jacked it up.

I agree that interior designers completely dropped the ball on the ergonomics. The center console is laughable and almost unusable while sitting in the car. Plugging in your phone for CarPlay requires a contortionist and having a charging pad in the rear seat is pretty silly. I had to DD mine for about 2 months while I was in between trucks, and I quickly tired of driving it everyday for sure. Now that it's just a fun car, I love it!

Date night? An older Jaguar XKR or F-type. A supercharged XKR will give you all the 150mph thrills you want.
It's classy. It's not about the motor, the horsepower. It looks like a million bucks, just like your wife. Probably requires just as much maintenance
if she's as you describe.
Camaros, Mustangs and Challengers are for teenage boys, or these days, twenty-something boys who couldn't afford one when they were teens.
Me, I worked in a factory and my bondo-city GTO ate the original pony cars for lunch.
Corvettes are for mid-life crisis grayhairs.
Jaguars are for gentlemen.
With the Jaguar, on a romantic evening, you don't have to worry about turning out the lights. The Prince of Darkness will do that for you!

IMO, modern Camaros look (and weigh) like gigantic slugs, especially the front ends. I don't give a crap how fast they are or how many bells and whistles they have.
I had a '68 and a '70, and especially the '70 looked ten times better than any Camaro made since.
A '70 but not mine, I have no good pix of it -- sold it in 1976:
