A paypal account is an e-mail address. As a new user, just a note of caution to you. Some sellers may ask the buyer to send money as friend/gift so they don't have to pay the 3% transaction fee. If as a buyer, you agree to this, your paypal protection is void, and they will not re-imburse you if you don't receive the item, or there is an issue with the item. As a long time PP user, I never send any $$ as a gift or friend. If I want the item and the seller asks, I offer to pay the 3% fee for him, so i remain protected in case of a bad transaction.
Many people on this forum have been refused protection because they sent the $$ as a gift, and received items that were not as described. You are then at the mercy of the seller as PP will not fight for you.
Good luck

As a seller, I do absorb the fee, but there are many that want to get the $$ as a gift so they don't have to pay that fee. It irks me to no end when a seller doesn't want to pay for the transaction fee. If I really want the item from a seller, and he wants the $$ sent as a gift, I either refuse to buy it, or I will offer to pay that fee so as to keep myself protected. As a PP user, I never ask any buyer to send me $$ as a gift. That is just so wrong in so many levels.

I like PayPal to send money to my daughter in college. Sends instantly and doesn’t cost anything. Extremely handy.
Have used it for buying parts via the internet for over 15 years. Works very well.

Sure enough and it generally only takes a day. I’ve never had a need for this so I learned something. Probably the only thing PayPal does not charge a fee for. The only major potential flaw with this is if anything goes haywire you have no recourse to recover lost money as compared to a cc account.

I too, have my PayPal linked to my personal checking account and to a credit card. No fees are incurred when using a bank/checking account. If/when I want credit card protection, I use the credit card that is also linked to my PayPal account. When using a linked credit card, PayPal does charge a small fee for using it, imho it’s worth the fee.

This is true but I don't trust them enough to give them an account number. I let them have one credit card which I don't use for anything else. I've never had a problem with PayPal, I just set it up this way more than a decade ago and it's worked ever since.
