GS vs base: A few questions
#41
Z06 wasn't part of the equation. That's a different animal. That car has reason to have scoops, spoilers and gills. It was GS vs base. On the GS those things are purely cosmetic. GS might LOOK more race like (in your garage) but out on the street I'd rather be driving a base with an extra 7-10k in my pockets than a car that looks more like a race car but has the exact same performance as the base. GS always seemed to me as one of those "keeping up with the joneses" type of vehicles. But I guess when you're out with the GS, you can always tell the unknowing that your GS is a race car and that base is, well, just a base. Just don't challenge one at a stop light when anyone is watching, lol.
To the OP: If you're considering a GS, a base car will be a let down for more than 1 reason. To those that own a base car: It's not a GS, Z06, or a ZR1, but it's still a Corvette, and that's the key.
I got a GS for the looks, the dry-sump LS3 (No head issues), and all the performance related thought and detail from the Z cars. I do track mine, and the only other realistic thing I wish transferred over from the Z06 is the gearing. Tracking/Dragging with the GS gears takes some getting used to. I bought my GS with 42K miles for 27K. The deals are out there, and will only be getting better once the C8 is dropped on the market.
Good luck in the hunt (half the fun!) and best wishes to you staying healthy and enjoying your toy, no matter what you choose.

You must be one broke or cheap SOB. You constantly keep bring up the couple of grand money difference between the two cars like it means a million dollars or something. **** I can blow the difference in the cost of the two cars in a weekend.

2021 C6 of the Year Finalist - Modified
In the hierarchy of life we have the GS'ers who are suave and debonair and we have the basers who are somewhat base in their habits and mannerisms.... So if you are looking for the cool factor, you gotta have a GS, preferably with the Heritage package and a 6M with a hand built engine in Wixom MI. Then you get a little plate on your engine that tells you the man who built your engine. Now that is cool my brutha..... All Corvettes are cool wide or skinny so whatever choice you make will make you happy.....but will it make you cool happy?
With a few extra bucks for engine mods you can have the horsepower of Z06 and have a removable roof to boot. I for one hope you choose the wide life....you will not be disappointed.....

The GS is a lot more than purely cosmetics, as has been mentioned if you would actually read. News flash 117mph > 115mph and 12.3sec < 12.6sec. Not to mention functional scoops, better suspension, brakes, and more rubber on the road which will help at those stop light drags. A nice GS with low mileage can be easily had for 30-32k. Sounds like someone has an inferiority complex. ABSOLUTELY, nothing is wrong with any C6 Base, GS, Z06. They are all gorgeous, amazing values per performance. However, don't be spouting BS that the GS is simply cosmetics over the Base that is 100% wrong.
BASE 1/4
12.6 seconds @ 115 mph
3,225 lbs.
6500 rpm AXLE RATIO 3.42:1 manual;
2.56:1 automatic O TO 60 4.2 seconds
GS 1/4
12.3 seconds @ 117 mph
3,330 lbs. 6500 rpm
AXLE RATIO 3.42:1 manual;
2.73:1 automatic O TO 60 3.95 seconds

Man, that's something I didn't even consider. If you have a base you can laugh at all the GS guys looking down their pompous noses at you cause you drive a mere base.
But hey, they look racy cool with their scoops, flares, spoilers and gills, lol. Silly me, GS's must be faster, right? I mean with all those racy looking doo dads. I might have to run out and get a GS so I can have scoops, flares, spoilers and gills also.
Then maybe I can justify my purchase by telling all the base guys what a let down their car is.
Oh boy, there goes that keeping up with the joneses thing again, lol
Naw, I think I'll just keep counting the money I saved by buying a base and kinda giggle inside when I hear a GS guy try and belittle me cause I have only a base, LOL

The rest of us bought corvettes to spend money....if you have a CFA you should fire them immediately.

In order to have a financial analyst you have to have some money to analyze. He keeps the couple of grand he saved by buying a base over a GS in the house so he can count it all the time to remind him how much better off he is.

Burning Brakes
To the OP. If your goals are to get as much HP out of it and plan to drag it, I would highly recommend the GS. Simply due to the fact that it has bigger wheels/tires, so you can get better traction. Anyone putting a ton of money into a base, and then going the route of a wide body kit, definitely took the longer path and still short the suspension / brakes. Unless they had the Z51... did they have a brake upgrade option for Base before the GS was released?
My buddy's dad has a C5 with a SC on it and a ton of other work done to it and is a bit under 700HP and he says he has serious issues getting traction if he gets aggressive with the car and was looking at modifications to get a wider rear to put bigger wheels & tires on it.

Well I have had both an 09 base Z-51 6M coup and loved it for over 3 yrs put about 30K on it. I wanted a convertible and figured I would upgrade to a GS I found the one I wanted and flew to phoenix and picked it up. I just really love the GS stance with the bigger tires and the wide booty.

How much did you pay for your base? Please tell me how much you could purchase the following for:
1. Dry sump oiling system
2. Forged Crank
3. Widebody components
4. 6/4pot brake system
5. Upgraded shocks/sways
6. Differential cooler
7. External oil cooler
8. 19x12 and 18x9.5 wheels and the appropriate sized tires
9. Battery relocation
10. Upgraded rear diff
11. Upgraded clutch
Don't need any of those? Fantastic! You chose correctly with the base model then. Some of us prefer/need the added performance for how we are using the vehicle.
For reference, I spent 27k for a GS with all the above and more. I think a comparable base car would have been around 23-24K from what I saw while searching for the right car.
There is an undeniable pecking order, whether some want to admit it or not, with the ZR1 being the top dog.
7) C6 Coupe/convertible
6) C6 Coupe Z51
5) C6 GS Convertible
4) C6 GS Coupe
3) C6 427 Convertible
2) C6 Z06
1) C6 ZR1

I live in NY. and I might be driving down to Florida in the summer. I have a bone stock 2013 GS. How about we meet up and if your base car is also stock, we race at a place that you can determine. The prize is the couple of grand you count in your house every day with the money you saved in buying the base. So lets say you put up 5K and I put up 5K, winner gets the money and you can even let one of your friends hold it. If interested I'll send you my telephone number if I am coming down. Agreed?
