Unfortunately this is a common problem. I encourage you to do a forum search on the subject. There are several different solutions ranging from DIY to going to the dealer. I was lucky when it happened to my car that it was under warranty. Good luck.

As for fix, its the shifter in park contact switch that is having problem, and most of the time just need to bend the lever slightly back so it presses the switch in enough to make contact instead. Hence switch energies the lock release solenoid assembly in the rear to allow you shift out of park, then once you are out of park, kill the power to release solenoid so it does not burn up holding the release lever back.
So this is the lever that needs to be bent backwards, so the shifter in park is allowing to close the circuit and open the shifter lock lever..

Burning Brakes
I have a 2006 with low mileage also, had the same problem as a lot of owners here, most of the time it happened, I was able to work it out, as suggested by others, push the shift lever forward, step on the brake pedal, listen for the click, then press and hope it releases. It might take a few attempts. There are a few well documented fixes you can employ, a quick search will get you the information available from very knowledgeable members here. A couple weeks ago I tried an alternative method involving hitting the shift lever and pulling back on the shift ****, it did release, but I unfortunately broke something within the shift assembly, I ended up spending over 550.00 for a new shift assembly and **** from the dealership. I installed the new unit last Sunday saving myself the additional 800. the dealership wanted for the install. The lesson I learned was to be careful with your car, do not bang and force things, there are a lot of plastic parts and small electrical connectors and sensors that do not react well to force. The car shifts well once again, I am looking forward to not having the Stuck in Park problem for hopefully a couple more years, HOPEFULLY I did look for an aftermarket shift assembly and have not found anything that would bolt in as easily as the Stock unit with the electrical components already installed. Most aftermarket shift units would need to be modified to keep your electrical start/lock/ brake systems operational. Would need someone with a lot more knowledge and training than I have, Good luck with whatever you decide, If you do decide to swap out your shift unit, it would be advisable to change the shift cable grommets, both ends if possible, this will save you additional grief as well, Salt
