Need a CAN-enabled (controller area network) scan tool or code reader. Amazon has them for cheap as 12 bucks. Plug it in the OBD port under dash/steering wheel.
Key-on-ignition-off...Go through the menu to READ CODES. Make sure you look at PENDING CODES because seller could have erase stored codes before you got there.
Even better is to get a scan tool (not code reader) that has an I/M READINESS function. This will tell you if the car has run a full drive cycle (200 miles or so) with no issues that would prevent car from passing an emission inspection if required in your area.
