Default Steering column fix problem?

I have the same problem as these two guys did

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ng-sensor.html
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...abilitrak.html

I removed the column and fixed it back the way it should be. Problem comes when I go to reinstall the 4 bolts that hold the column, they are about and inch away from the bolt holes (with the u-joint connected already) OR if I mount the column correctly then the single bolt that mounts to the U-Joint (at the firewall) is an inch off. If I pull the column back to line up the holes the bearing and steering sensor pop back out to the way they were. (back to the drawing board)

It seems somehow that the column itself has collapsed and is now an inch shorter than it was? Moving the telescopic parts do nothing to solve this.

Is there a way to re-extend the column itself? Do I need a new column? Seems there a very few threads on this problem but nobody ever came back with a solution.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Not a lot of info out there on this problem, but yes the column will extend and collapse about an inch. Stick a screwdriver through the bolt hole and push toward the front of the car, you have to give it a good push.
