Lazy Start
Some background, I just completed changing out a bent piston rod, with new piston, rings, bearings, etc.
Started driving the car and noticed that when I went to start it, it seemed like it was laboring slightly to start but it always starts when it is cold.
I replaced the battery with new stock delco.
No change in the starting.
I then disconnect the terminals to the starter and ground to the frame and cleaned them with dremel.
Slight improvement but still a lazy start.
I also noticed that after the car is driven and warms up it barely wants to start. Almost got stuck the other day when I released the clutch too quick and stalled it out on the highway.
Did some research and it seems like the next step would be to replace the starter with a higher torque and geared for easier rotation of the flywheel.
Looking for anyone who has gone through this or has knowledge about my problem and to confirm I'm on the right path.
Also looking for recommendations on starters.
Lastly I was planning to wrap the new starter with heat wrap to help keep it cooler.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Just for everyone's info it's a base 2006 C6, manual transmission with 39,000 miles.
If you don't think it's the starter, then what my cause this issue.
The only other thing someone said is if the timing is off that will make it harder to start but the car seems to run fine after it starts which I would think wouldn't be the case if the timing was off.

Was everything fine before tearing the engine down?
I can't really say because I only started it once before I pulled the engine apart. I can't really remember if it started "normally".
The engine did ingest water, that is what bent the rod.
I have the shop manuals and so maybe I will check and see if it tells you how to check the timing.
This way I can at least check that off the list.
