Hi all. considering a C-6 and was wondering about auto transmission, are there more than one automatic for the c-6 and if so what is the preferred one? Any and all help appreciated

2005 had the 4-speed. 2006, indeed had the 6-speed. All the 6-speeds are identical with the exception of programming of the computer in later years to crisp up the shift timing. This can be done in the aftermarket as well.
No. But if you buy a used Diablo hand held programmer it will handle it for you. I guess you could buy a new one too but an older used one will work and save some $$

The Diablo hand held programmer works well on my 2008 auto trans. Big improvement.
there are 2 gear sets for the A6 the 2.56 gears and 2.73 (GU2 RPO code) not a huge difference but notable
That RPO code refers to the differential, not the gearing in the trans. Yes the earlier model A6's shift slower then the new models, but a tune for the trans will fix that. Mine is tunes and it shifts faster then the non-tuned and mine is an '07 A6.
2005 was the only year for the 4 speed. 2006-13 had the 6 speed auto. Since you are going used, I wouldn't even consider the 2005. Those 4 speed autos aren't known for their durability when going beyond stock power levels. Sure they can be built to handle power, but the 6 speed seems to be much more durable compared to the 4 speed counterpart. Most of my research is based on the full size truck platforms, but transmissions were basically the same across these vehicles.
Of course, my solution would be to forego the auto altogether, and get a 6 speed manual.

ahhh after looking further you are right i learned something
what are the differences in differential ?
def agree on the trans tune mine greatly improved the auto behaviors

Rear axle ratio. Probably 3.23 vs 3.42. Numerically higher number means more engine RPM at a given MPH compared to a numerically lower gear. All things being equal, you can get faster acceleration because the torque multiplier (engine torque at specific RPM * transmission gear * rear axle gear) is greater.
