Took my 07' in for inspection today and was told of a recall to replace the UBEC
What is the UBEC?
UBEC is GM-ese for fusebox. It's the plastic box on the passenger side of the engine compartment with all the fuses and relays.
Presumably they're referring to the recall for the low-beam malfunction, which is indeed caused by a flaw in the UBEC. However, GM's fix wasn't to replace the UBEC, but to install a wire to bypass it.
Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (UBEC). Has to do with the low beam headlight issue. If you do a web search looking for Corvette UBEC Recall the info should pop-up for you. You can also go to a Chevrolet Dealer and ask them to run an GM VIS report (I think this is the correct terminology) and they can tell you if the recall service was ever performed on your car.
I have an 06 and I refuse to let the dealer do the recall. I have not had the low beam issue yet, and if I do, I'll do the fix myself.
The problem is a sharp turn in the ground wire for the low beam expands and contracts with heat and cold. Some wires break at the bend, and the engine bay heat makes the ground wire expand and the low beams quit working.
Here is the pic of that ground wire that has the break in it.
GM dealers simply install a bypass around the break.
This is a classic case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Yes, there is a recall that relates to possible loss of the lo-beam headlight function. However, there's nothing mandatory about the recall; even if lo-beams were to fail, hi-beams will still operate at least to get you home; if & when your lo-beams were to fail, you can then have the fix done under the recall at no cost. Like many others, I'm reluctant to have the "fumble fingers" at some dealership do unnecessary work on my Vette.
